他们正想杀他的时候，有人报告营部的千夫长，说：“整个耶路撒冷都乱了！”千夫长立刻带着一些百夫长和士兵跑到他们那里。众人一看见千夫长和士兵，就停止殴打保罗。

那时，彼拉多吩咐人把耶稣拉去鞭打。

这个人被犹太人捉住，快要遭害的时候，我听说他是罗马公民，就带兵去把他救出来。

士兵正用皮带绑他的时候，保罗对站在旁边的百夫长说：“你们鞭打一个还没有定罪的罗马公民，是合法的吗？”百夫长听了，就去报告千夫长，说：“这个人是罗马公民，你要怎么办呢？”千夫长就来问保罗：“告诉我，你是罗马公民吗？”他说：“是的。”千夫长说：“我花了一大笔钱，才取得罗马籍。”保罗说：“我生下来就是罗马公民。”于是那些要拷问他的人，立刻离开他走了。千夫长既知道他是罗马公民，又因捆绑过他，就害怕起来。

群众一齐起来攻击他们，裁判官就剥去他们的衣服，下令用棍子打他们。打了很多棍，就把他们放在监牢里，吩咐狱吏严密看守。
