因這理由，我請你們來見面談話。其實我是為了以色列所盼望的事，才被這鎖鏈捆鎖的。」

於是那些要拷問他的人，立刻退下了。千夫長既知道他是羅馬公民，又因為捆綁了他，就懼怕起來。

願主施憐憫給奧尼斯弗羅的家人，因為他多次使我神清氣爽，也沒有以我的鎖鏈為恥；

我回答他們：在被告還沒有與原告當面對質，並且對被控罪名還沒有獲得申辯機會以前，就把被告交出去，這不符合羅馬人的規矩。

於是彼拉多出來，到他們那裡，說：「你們提出什麼來控告這個人？」他們回答說：「這個人如果不是作惡的，我們就不會把他交給你了。」

保羅說：「無論話多話少，我向神祈求的，不僅是您，還有今天所有聽我講話的人都能成為像我這樣的人，只是不要有這些鎖鏈！」

我為這福音受苦，甚至像罪犯一樣被捆綁；然而神的話語是不受捆綁的。

千夫長下令把保羅押進營樓，吩咐鞭打拷問他，要了解民眾是因什麼理由向他這樣一直喊叫。當士兵們用皮條捆上保羅的時候，他對站在旁邊的百夫長說：「你們鞭打一個沒有被定罪的羅馬公民，可以嗎？」
