So because he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants on his throne,

But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.

But David was a prophet. He knew that God had made a promise to him. God had promised that he would make someone in David’s family line king after him.

Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne,

But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an oath that one of David’s own descendants would sit on his throne.

Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn an oath to him to seat one of his descendants on his throne.

The Lord has sworn to David A truth from which He will not turn back:“ I will set upon your throne one from the fruit of your body.If your sons will keep My covenant And My testimony which I will teach them, Their sons also will sit upon your throne forever.”For the Lord has chosen Zion; He has desired it as His dwelling place.“ This is My resting place forever; Here I will dwell, for I have desired it.I will abundantly bless her food; I will satisfy her needy with bread.I will also clothe her priests with salvation, And her godly ones will sing aloud for joy.I will make the horn of David spring forth there; I have prepared a lamp for My anointed.I will clothe his enemies with shame, But upon himself his crown will gleam.”

even from the day that I appointed judges over My people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. The Lord also declares to you that the Lord will make a house for you.When your days are finished and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come from you, and I will establish his kingdom.He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he does wrong, I will discipline him with a rod of men and with strokes of sons of mankind,but My favor shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from you.Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ”

for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

“ I have made a covenant with My chosen; I have sworn to My servant David,I will establish your descendants forever And build up your throne to all generations.” Selah

“ The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me, And His word was on my tongue.

“ Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.

Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descendant of David, according to my gospel,

In the same way God, desiring even more to demonstrate to the heirs of the promise the fact that His purpose is unchangeable, confirmed it with an oath,

And has raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of His servant David—Just as He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient times—

Once You spoke in vision to Your godly ones, And said,“ I have given help to one who is mighty; I have exalted one chosen from the people.I have found My servant David; With My holy oil I have anointed him,With whom My hand will be established; My arm also will strengthen him.The enemy will not deceive him, Nor will the son of wickedness afflict him.But I will crush his adversaries before him, And strike those who hate him.My faithfulness and My favor will be with him, And in My name his horn will be exalted.I will also place his hand on the sea, And his right hand on the rivers.He will call to Me,‘ You are my Father, My God, and the rock of my salvation.’I will also make him My firstborn, The highest of the kings of the earth.I will maintain My favor for him forever, And My covenant shall be confirmed to him.So I will establish his descendants forever, And his throne as the days of heaven.“ If his sons abandon My Law And do not walk in My judgments,If they violate My statutes And do not keep My commandments,Then I will punish their wrongdoing with the rod, And their guilt with afflictions.But I will not withhold My favor from him, Nor deal falsely in My faithfulness.I will not violate My covenant, Nor will I alter the utterance of My lips.Once I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David.His descendants shall endure forever, And his throne as the sun before Me.It shall be established forever like the moon, And a witness in the sky is faithful.” Selah

When your days are fulfilled that you must go to be with your fathers, then I will set up one of your descendants after you, who will be from your sons; and I will establish his kingdom.He shall build for Me a house, and I will establish his throne forever.I will be his father and he shall be My son; and I will not take My favor away from him, as I took it from him who was before you.But I will settle him in My house and in My kingdom forever, and his throne will be established forever.” ’ ”According to all these words and according to all of this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says,“ Today if you hear His voice,

And behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you shall name Him Jesus.He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David;and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”

He again sets a certain day,“ Today,” saying through David after so long a time just as has been said before,“ Today if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts.”

Give the king Your judgments, God, And Your righteousness to the king’s son.May he judge Your people with righteousness And Your afflicted with justice.May the mountains bring peace to the people, And the hills, in righteousness.May he vindicate the afflicted of the people, Save the children of the needy, And crush the oppressor.May they fear You while the sun shines, And as long as the moon shines, throughout all generations.May he come down like rain upon the mown grass, Like showers that water the earth.May the righteous flourish in his days, As well as an abundance of peace, until the moon is no more.May he also rule from sea to sea, And from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth.May the nomads of the desert bow before him, And his enemies lick the dust.May the kings of Tarshish and of the islands bring gifts; May the kings of Sheba and Seba offer tributes.And may all kings bow down before him, All nations serve him.For he will save the needy when he cries for help, The afflicted also, and him who has no helper.He will have compassion on the poor and needy, And he will save the lives of the needy.He will rescue their life from oppression and violence, And their blood will be precious in his sight;So may he live, and may the gold of Sheba be given to him; And they are to pray for him continually; They are to bless him all day long.May there be abundance of grain on the earth on top of the mountains; Its fruit will wave like the cedars of Lebanon; And may those from the city flourish like the vegetation of the earth.May his name endure forever; May his name produce descendants as long as the sun shines; And may people wish blessings on themselves by him; May all nations call him blessed.Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, Who alone works wonders.And blessed be His glorious name forever; And may the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen and Amen.

And so the angel said to them,“ Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people;for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

( for they indeed became priests without an oath, but He with an oath through the One who said to Him,“ The Lord has sworn And will not change His mind,‘ You are a priest forever’ ”);

Jesus answered,“ My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.”Therefore Pilate said to Him,“ So You are a king?” Jesus answered,“ You say correctly that I am a king. For this purpose I have been born, and for this I have come into the world: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.”

For a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of armies will accomplish this.

The Lord says to my Lord:“ Sit at My right hand Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”The Lord will stretch out Your strong scepter from Zion, saying,“ Rule in the midst of Your enemies.”Your people will volunteer freely on the day of Your power; In holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn, Your youth are to You as the dew.The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind,“ You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”The Lord is at Your right hand; He will shatter kings in the day of His wrath.

For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham as he was returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,to whom also Abraham apportioned a tenth of all the spoils, was first of all, by the translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace.

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and she will name Him Immanuel.

But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Too little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will come forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His times of coming forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity.”

And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written:“ KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

David himself said in the Holy Spirit,‘ The Lord said to my Lord,“ Sit at My right hand, Until I put Your enemies under Your feet.” ’

Now He said to them,“ These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all the things that are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

‘ Behold, days are coming,’ declares the Lord,‘ when I will fulfill the good word which I have spoken concerning the house of Israel and the house of Judah.In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch of David sprout; and He shall execute justice and righteousness on the earth.

“ On that day I will raise up the fallen shelter of David, And wall up its gaps; I will also raise up its ruins And rebuild it as in the days of old;So that they may possess the remnant of Edom And all the nations who are called by My name,” Declares the Lord who does this.

“ Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord,“ When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; And He will reign as king and act wisely And do justice and righteousness in the land.In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will live securely; And this is His name by which He will be called,‘ The Lord Our Righteousness.’

“ But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain.”“ I will announce the decree of the Lord: He said to Me,‘ You are My Son, Today I have fathered You.Ask it of Me, and I will certainly give the nations as Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth as Your possession.You shall break them with a rod of iron, You shall shatter them like earthenware.’ ”Now then, you kings, use insight; Let yourselves be instructed, you judges of the earth.Serve the Lord with reverence And rejoice with trembling.Kiss the Son, that He not be angry and you perish on the way, For His wrath may be kindled quickly. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!

concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh,

He* said to them,“ Then how does David in the Spirit call Him‘ Lord,’ saying,

Again Isaiah says,“ There shall come the root of Jesse, And He who arises to rule over the Gentiles, In Him will the Gentiles hope.”

These will wage war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them because He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are the called and chosen and faithful.”

And when they had crucified Him, they divided His garments among themselves by casting lots.
