Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;

But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.

But David was a prophet. He knew that God had made a promise to him. God had promised that he would make someone in David’s family line king after him.

Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne,

But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an oath that one of David’s own descendants would sit on his throne.

Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn an oath to him to seat one of his descendants on his throne.

The LORD hath sworn[ in] truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.If thy children will keep my covenant and my testimony that I shall teach them, their children shall also sit upon thy throne for evermore.For the LORD hath chosen Zion; he hath desired[ it] for his habitation.This[ is] my rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it.I will abundantly bless her provision: I will satisfy her poor with bread.I will also clothe her priests with salvation: and her saints shall shout aloud for joy.There will I make the horn of David to bud: I have ordained a lamp for mine anointed.His enemies will I clothe with shame: but upon himself shall his crown flourish.

And as since the time that I commanded judges[ to be] over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house.And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took[ it] from Saul, whom I put away before thee.And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake[ as they were] moved by the Holy Ghost.

I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant,Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.

The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word[ was] in my tongue.

Men[ and] brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.

Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:

Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed[ it] by an oath:

And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:

Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon[ one that is] mighty; I have exalted[ one] chosen out of the people.I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him:With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him.The enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him.And I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate him.But my faithfulness and my mercy[ shall be] with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted.I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers.He shall cry unto me, Thou[ art] my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.Also I will make him[ my] firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him.His seed also will I make[ to endure] for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments;If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments;Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David.His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me.It shall be established for ever as the moon, and[ as] a faithful witness in heaven. And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go[ to be] with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom.He shall build me an house, and I will stablish his throne for ever.I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took[ it] from[ him] that was before thee:But I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be established for evermore.According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

Wherefore( as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,

And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king’s son.He shall judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with judgment.The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness.He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations.He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers[ that] water the earth.In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth.He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and[ him] that hath no helper.He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba: prayer also shall be made for him continually;[ and] daily shall he be praised.There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and[ they] of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and[ men] shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.Blessed[ be] the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.And blessed[ be] his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled[ with] his glory; Amen, and Amen.

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

( For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou[ art] a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:)

Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.Of the increase of[ his] government and peace[ there shall be] no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.Thy people[ shall be] willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou[ art] a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath.

For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah,[ though] thou be little among the thousands of Judah,[ yet] out of thee shall he come forth unto me[ that is] to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth[ have been] from of old, from everlasting.

And he hath on[ his] vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

And he said unto them, These[ are] the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and[ in] the prophets, and[ in] the psalms, concerning me.

Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah.In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land.

In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old:That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the LORD that doeth this.

Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this[ is] his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou[ art] my Son; this day have I begotten thee.Ask of me, and I shall give[ thee] the heathen[ for] thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth[ for] thy possession.Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish[ from] the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed[ are] all they that put their trust in him.

Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;

He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,

And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.

These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him[ are] called, and chosen, and faithful.

And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.
