But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.

But David was a prophet. He knew that God had made a promise to him. God had promised that he would make someone in David’s family line king after him.

But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an oath that one of David’s own descendants would sit on his throne.

Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn an oath to him to seat one of his descendants on his throne.

So because he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants on his throne,

Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne,

The Lord swore to David a sure oath from which he will not turn back:“ One of the sons of your body I will set on your throne.If your sons keep my covenant and my testimonies that I shall teach them, their sons also forever shall sit on your throne.”For the Lord has chosen Zion; he has desired it for his dwelling place:“ This is my resting place forever; here I will dwell, for I have desired it.I will abundantly bless her provisions; I will satisfy her poor with bread.Her priests I will clothe with salvation, and her saints will shout for joy.There I will make a horn to sprout for David; I have prepared a lamp for my anointed.His enemies I will clothe with shame, but on him his crown will shine.”

from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house.When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men,but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you.And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’”

For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

You have said,“ I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant:‘ I will establish your offspring forever, and build your throne for all generations.’” Selah

“ The Spirit of the Lord speaks by me; his word is on my tongue.

“ Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.

Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel,

So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath,

and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David,as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,

Of old you spoke in a vision to your godly one, and said:“ I have granted help to one who is mighty; I have exalted one chosen from the people.I have found David, my servant; with my holy oil I have anointed him,so that my hand shall be established with him; my arm also shall strengthen him.The enemy shall not outwit him; the wicked shall not humble him.I will crush his foes before him and strike down those who hate him.My faithfulness and my steadfast love shall be with him, and in my name shall his horn be exalted.I will set his hand on the sea and his right hand on the rivers.He shall cry to me,‘ You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.’And I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.My steadfast love I will keep for him forever, and my covenant will stand firm for him.I will establish his offspring forever and his throne as the days of the heavens.If his children forsake my law and do not walk according to my rules,if they violate my statutes and do not keep my commandments,then I will punish their transgression with the rod and their iniquity with stripes,but I will not remove from him my steadfast love or be false to my faithfulness.I will not violate my covenant or alter the word that went forth from my lips.Once for all I have sworn by my holiness; I will not lie to David.His offspring shall endure forever, his throne as long as the sun before me.Like the moon it shall be established forever, a faithful witness in the skies.” Selah

When your days are fulfilled to walk with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom.He shall build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever.I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. I will not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from him who was before you,but I will confirm him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever.’”In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.

Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,“ Today, if you hear his voice,

And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

again he appoints a certain day,“ Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted,“ Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”

Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to the royal son!May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice!Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people, and the hills, in righteousness!May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor!May they fear you while the sun endures, and as long as the moon, throughout all generations!May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass, like showers that water the earth!In his days may the righteous flourish, and peace abound, till the moon be no more!May he have dominion from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth!May desert tribes bow down before him, and his enemies lick the dust!May the kings of Tarshish and of the coastlands render him tribute; may the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts!May all kings fall down before him, all nations serve him!For he delivers the needy when he calls, the poor and him who has no helper.He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the needy.From oppression and violence he redeems their life, and precious is their blood in his sight.Long may he live; may gold of Sheba be given to him! May prayer be made for him continually, and blessings invoked for him all the day!May there be abundance of grain in the land; on the tops of the mountains may it wave; may its fruit be like Lebanon; and may people blossom in the cities like the grass of the field!May his name endure forever, his fame continue as long as the sun! May people be blessed in him, all nations call him blessed!Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things.Blessed be his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory! And the angel said to them,“ Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him:“ The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind,‘ You are a priest forever.’”

Jesus answered,“ My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”Then Pilate said to him,“ So you are a king?” Jesus answered,“ You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world— to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

The Lord says to my Lord:“ Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies!Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours.The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind,“ You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.

For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace.

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.

On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.

David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared,“‘ The Lord said to my Lord,“ Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.”’

Then he said to them,“ These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

“ Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah.In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.

“ In that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen and repair its breaches, and raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old,that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations who are called by my name,” declares the Lord who does this.

“ Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called:‘ The Lord is our righteousness.’

“ As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.”I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me,“ You are my Son; today I have begotten you.Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth.Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh

He said to them,“ How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

And again Isaiah says,“ The root of Jesse will come, even he who arises to rule the Gentiles; in him will the Gentiles hope.”

They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.”

And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots.
