But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.

But David was a prophet. He knew that God had made a promise to him. God had promised that he would make someone in David’s family line king after him.

Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne,

The LORD swore an oath to David, a promise he will not abandon:“ I will set one of your offspring on your throne.If your sons keep my covenant and my decrees that I will teach them, their sons will also sit on your throne forever.”For the LORD has chosen Zion; he has desired it for his home:“ This is my resting place forever; I will make my home here because I have desired it.I will abundantly bless its food; I will satisfy its needy with bread.I will clothe its priests with salvation, and its faithful people will shout for joy.There I will make a horn grow for David; I have prepared a lamp for my anointed one.I will clothe his enemies with shame, but the crown he wears will be glorious.”

ever since the day I ordered judges to be over my people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies.“‘ The LORD declares to you: The LORD himself will make a house for you.When your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.He is the one who will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with a rod of men and blows from mortals.But my faithful love will never leave him as it did when I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.Your house and kingdom will endure before me forever, and your throne will be established forever.’”

because no prophecy ever came by the will of man; instead, men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

The LORD said,“ I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn an oath to David my servant:‘ I will establish your offspring forever and build up your throne for all generations.’” Selah

The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me, his word was on my tongue.

“ Brothers and sisters, it was necessary that the Scripture be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit through the mouth of David foretold about Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.

Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead and descended from David, according to my gospel,

Because God wanted to show his unchangeable purpose even more clearly to the heirs of the promise, he guaranteed it with an oath,

He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David,just as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets in ancient times;

You once spoke in a vision to your faithful ones and said,“ I have granted help to a warrior; I have exalted one chosen from the people.I have found David my servant; I have anointed him with my sacred oil.My hand will always be with him, and my arm will strengthen him.The enemy will not oppress him; the wicked will not afflict him.I will crush his foes before him and strike those who hate him.My faithfulness and love will be with him, and through my name his horn will be exalted.I will extend his power to the sea and his right hand to the rivers.He will call to me,‘ You are my Father, my God, the rock of my salvation.’I will also make him my firstborn, greatest of the kings of the earth.I will always preserve my faithful love for him, and my covenant with him will endure.I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as heaven lasts.If his sons abandon my instruction and do not live by my ordinances,if they dishonor my statutes and do not keep my commands,then I will call their rebellion to account with the rod, their iniquity with blows.But I will not withdraw my faithful love from him or betray my faithfulness.I will not violate my covenant or change what my lips have said.Once and for all I have sworn an oath by my holiness; I will not lie to David.His offspring will continue forever, his throne like the sun before me,like the moon, established forever, a faithful witness in the sky.” Selah

When your time comes to be with your ancestors, I will raise up after you your descendant, who is one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom.He is the one who will build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever.I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will not remove my faithful love from him as I removed it from the one who was before you.I will appoint him over my house and my kingdom forever, and his throne will be established forever.’”Nathan reported all these words and this entire vision to David.

Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: Today, if you hear his voice,

Now listen: You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will have no end.”

he again specifies a certain day— today. He specified this speaking through David after such a long time: Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.

God, give your justice to the king and your righteousness to the king’s son.He will judge your people with righteousness and your afflicted ones with justice.May the mountains bring well-being to the people and the hills, righteousness.May he vindicate the afflicted among the people, help the poor, and crush the oppressor.May they fear you while the sun endures and as long as the moon, throughout all generations.May the king be like rain that falls on the cut grass, like spring showers that water the earth.May the righteous flourish in his days and well-being abound until the moon is no more.May he rule from sea to sea and from the Euphrates to the ends of the earth.May desert tribes kneel before him and his enemies lick the dust.May the kings of Tarshish and the coasts and islands bring tribute, the kings of Sheba and Seba offer gifts.Let all kings bow in homage to him, all nations serve him.For he will rescue the poor who cry out and the afflicted who have no helper.He will have pity on the poor and helpless and save the lives of the poor.He will redeem them from oppression and violence, for their lives are precious in his sight.May he live long! May gold from Sheba be given to him. May prayer be offered for him continually, and may he be blessed all day long.May there be plenty of grain in the land; may it wave on the tops of the mountains. May its crops be like Lebanon. May people flourish in the cities like the grass of the field.May his name endure forever; as long as the sun shines, may his fame increase. May all nations be blessed by him and call him blessed.Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who alone does wonders.Blessed be his glorious name forever; the whole earth is filled with his glory. But the angel said to them,“ Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people:Today in the city of David a Savior was born for you, who is the Messiah, the Lord.

but he became a priest with an oath made by the one who said to him: The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind,“ You are a priest forever.”

“ My kingdom is not of this world,” said Jesus.“ If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight, so that I wouldn’t be handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.”“ You are a king then?” Pilate asked.“ You say that I’m a king,” Jesus replied.“ I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”

For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from now on and forever. The zeal of the LORD of Armies will accomplish this.

This is the declaration of the LORD to my Lord:“ Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.”The LORD will extend your mighty scepter from Zion. Rule over your surrounding enemies.Your people will volunteer on your day of battle. In holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn, the dew of your youth belongs to you.The LORD has sworn an oath and will not take it back:“ You are a priest forever according to the pattern of Melchizedek.”The Lord is at your right hand; he will crush kings on the day of his anger.

For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of God Most High, met Abraham and blessed him as he returned from defeating the kings,and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, his name means king of righteousness, then also, king of Salem, meaning king of peace.

Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign: See, the virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel.

Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are small among the clans of Judah; one will come from you to be ruler over Israel for me. His origin is from antiquity, from ancient times.

And he has a name written on his robe and on his thigh: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

David himself says by the Holy Spirit: The Lord declared to my Lord,‘ Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.’

He told them,“ These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you— that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

“ Look, the days are coming”— this is the LORD’s declaration—“ when I will fulfill the good promise that I have spoken concerning the house of Israel and the house of Judah.In those days and at that time I will cause a Righteous Branch to sprout up for David, and he will administer justice and righteousness in the land.

In that day I will restore the fallen shelter of David: I will repair its gaps, restore its ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old,so that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations that bear my name— this is the declaration of the LORD; he will do this.

“ Look, the days are coming”— this is the LORD’s declaration—“ when I will raise up a Righteous Branch for David. He will reign wisely as king and administer justice and righteousness in the land.In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. This is the name he will be called: The LORD Is Our Righteousness.

“ I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.”I will declare the LORD’s decree. He said to me,“ You are my Son; today I have become your Father.Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance and the ends of the earth your possession.You will break them with an iron scepter; you will shatter them like pottery.”So now, kings, be wise; receive instruction, you judges of the earth.Serve the LORD with reverential awe and rejoice with trembling.Pay homage to the Son or he will be angry and you will perish in your rebellion, for his anger may ignite at any moment. All who take refuge in him are happy.

concerning his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who was a descendant of David according to the flesh

He asked them,“ How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him‘ Lord’:

And again, Isaiah says, The root of Jesse will appear, the one who rises to rule the Gentiles; the Gentiles will hope in him.

These will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will conquer them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings. Those with him are called, chosen, and faithful.”

After crucifying him, they divided his clothes by casting lots.
