Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them.

They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

They saw something that looked like fire in the shape of tongues. The flames separated and came to rest on each of them.

And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.

Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.

“ I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am— so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

Does not my word burn like fire?” says the Lord.“ Is it not like a mighty hammer that smashes a rock to pieces?

Then John testified,“ I saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and resting upon him.I didn’t know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me,‘ The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’

They said to each other,“ Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?”

“ Look!” he said.“ The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them!

( both Jews and converts to Judaism), Cretans, and Arabs. And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done!”

And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.He will delight in obeying the Lord. He will not judge by appearance nor make a decision based on hearsay.

And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

But Jesus said,“ It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires.” So John agreed to baptize him.

“ But who will be able to endure it when he comes? Who will be able to stand and face him when he appears? For he will be like a blazing fire that refines metal, or like a strong soap that bleaches clothes.He will sit like a refiner of silver, burning away the dross. He will purify the Levites, refining them like gold and silver, so that they may once again offer acceptable sacrifices to the Lord.

And I saw another angel flying through the sky, carrying the eternal Good News to proclaim to the people who belong to this world— to every nation, tribe, language, and people.

And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.

Confuse them, Lord, and frustrate their plans, for I see violence and conflict in the city.

Then I said,“ It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”

And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will be clothed in burlap and will prophesy during those 1,260 days.”

During this time, when about 120 believers were together in one place, Peter stood up and addressed them.

He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said.
