Paul said,“ John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”

Paul said,“ John baptized people, calling them to turn away from their sins. He told them to believe in the one who was coming after him. Jesus is that one.”

And Paul said,“ John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.”

Paul said,“ John’s baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus.”

Paul said,“ John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.”

Paul said,“ John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”

Then Paul said,“ John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”

And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him that should come after him, that is, on Jesus.

Paul said,“ John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people that they should believe in the One who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.”

Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

Paul said,“ John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.”

He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that everyone might believe through him.

who is coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandal!”

From the descendants of this man God brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, just as he promised.Before Jesus arrived, John had proclaimed a baptism for repentance to all the people of Israel.But while John was completing his mission, he said repeatedly,‘ What do you think I am? I am not he. But look, one is coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet!’

On the next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,“ Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!This is the one about whom I said,‘ After me comes a man who is greater than I am, because he existed before me.’I did not recognize him, but I came baptizing with water so that he could be revealed to Israel.”Then John testified,“ I saw the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven, and it remained on him.And I did not recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me,‘ The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining– this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’I have both seen and testified that this man is the Chosen One of God.”

“ Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?”Jesus answered them,“ Go tell John what you hear and see:The blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news proclaimed to them.

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,“ Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way,the voice of one shouting in the wilderness,‘ Prepare the way for the Lord, make his paths straight.’”In the wilderness John the baptizer began preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.People from the whole Judean countryside and all of Jerusalem were going out to him, and he was baptizing them in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.John wore a garment made of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.He proclaimed,“ One more powerful than I am is coming after me; I am not worthy to bend down and untie the strap of his sandals.I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”Now in those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan River.And just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.And a voice came from heaven:“ You are my one dear Son; in you I take great delight.”The Spirit immediately drove him into the wilderness.

John testified about him and shouted out,“ This one was the one about whom I said,‘ He who comes after me is greater than I am, because he existed before me.’”

You yourselves can testify that I said,‘ I am not the Christ,’ but rather,‘ I have been sent before him.’The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands by and listens for him, rejoices greatly when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. This then is my joy, and it is complete.He must become more important while I become less important.”The one who comes from above is superior to all. The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly things. The one who comes from heaven is superior to all.He testifies about what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony.The one who has accepted his testimony has confirmed clearly that God is truthful.For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he does not give the Spirit sparingly.The Father loves the Son and has placed all things under his authority.The one who believes in the Son has eternal life. The one who rejects the Son will not see life, but God’s wrath remains on him.

“ I baptize you with water, for repentance, but the one coming after me is more powerful than I am– I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clean out his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the storehouse, but the chaff he will burn up with inextinguishable fire.”

John answered them all,“ I baptize you with water, but one more powerful than I am is coming– I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.His winnowing fork is in his hand to clean out his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his storehouse, but the chaff he will burn up with inextinguishable fire.”And in this way, with many other exhortations, John proclaimed good news to the people.

Where did John’s baptism come from? From heaven or from people?” They discussed this among themselves, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will say,‘ Then why did you not believe him?’But if we say,‘ From people,’ we fear the crowd, for they all consider John to be a prophet.”So they answered Jesus,“ We don’t know.” Then he said to them,“ Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.“ What do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said,‘ Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’The boy answered,‘ I will not.’ But later he had a change of heart and went.The father went to the other son and said the same thing. This boy answered,‘ I will, sir,’ but did not go.Which of the two did his father’s will?” They said,“ The first.” Jesus said to them,“ I tell you the truth, tax collectors and prostitutes will go ahead of you into the kingdom of God!For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him. But the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe. Although you saw this, you did not later change your minds and believe him.

And I remembered the word of the Lord, as he used to say,‘ John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’

You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.( I do not accept human testimony, but I say this so that you may be saved.)He was a lamp that was burning and shining, and you wanted to rejoice greatly for a short time in his light.

For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High. For you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,to give his people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins.Because of our God’s tender mercy the dawn will break upon us from on highto give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
