Paul said,“ John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”

Paul said,“ John baptized people, calling them to turn away from their sins. He told them to believe in the one who was coming after him. Jesus is that one.”

And Paul said,“ John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.”

Paul said,“ John’s baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus.”

Paul said,“ John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”

Then Paul said,“ John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”

And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him that should come after him, that is, on Jesus.

Paul said,“ John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people that they should believe in the One who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.”

Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

Paul said,“ John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.”

Paul said,“ John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.”

He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him.

He is the one coming after me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to untie.”

“ From this man’s descendants, as he promised, God brought to Israel the Savior, Jesus.Before his coming to public attention, John had previously proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.Now as John was completing his mission, he said,‘ Who do you think I am? I am not the one. But one is coming after me, and I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet.’

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,“ Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!This is the one I told you about:‘ After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’I didn’t know him, but I came baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.”And John testified,“ I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and he rested on him.I didn’t know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water told me,‘ The one you see the Spirit descending and resting on— he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”

and asked him,“ Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”Jesus replied to them,“ Go and report to John what you hear and see:The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor are told the good news,

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way.A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way for the Lord; make his paths straight!John came baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.John wore a camel-hair garment with a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.He proclaimed,“ One who is more powerful than I am is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the strap of his sandals.I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John.As soon as he came up out of the water, he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.And a voice came from heaven:“ You are my beloved Son; with you I am well-pleased.”Immediately the Spirit drove him into the wilderness.

You yourselves can testify that I said,‘ I am not the Messiah, but I’ve been sent ahead of him.’He who has the bride is the groom. But the groom’s friend, who stands by and listens for him, rejoices greatly at the groom’s voice. So this joy of mine is complete.He must increase, but I must decrease.”The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is from the earth is earthly and speaks in earthly terms. The one who comes from heaven is above all.He testifies to what he has seen and heard, and yet no one accepts his testimony.The one who has accepted his testimony has affirmed that God is true.For the one whom God sent speaks God’s words, since he gives the Spirit without measure.The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hands.The one who believes in the Son has eternal life, but the one who rejects the Son will not see life; instead, the wrath of God remains on him.

“ I baptize you with water for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to remove his sandals. He himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.His winnowing shovel is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn. But the chaff he will burn with fire that never goes out.”

John answered them all,“ I baptize you with water, but one who is more powerful than I am is coming. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.His winnowing shovel is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with fire that never goes out.”Then, along with many other exhortations, he proclaimed good news to the people.

Did John’s baptism come from heaven, or was it of human origin?” They discussed it among themselves,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will say to us,‘ Then why didn’t you believe him?’But if we say,‘ Of human origin,’ we’re afraid of the crowd, because everyone considers John to be a prophet.”So they answered Jesus,“ We don’t know.” And he said to them,“ Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.“ What do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said,‘ My son, go work in the vineyard today.’“ He answered,‘ I don’t want to,’ but later he changed his mind and went.Then the man went to the other and said the same thing.‘ I will, sir,’ he answered, but he didn’t go.Which of the two did his father’s will?” They said,“ The first.” Jesus said to them,“ Truly I tell you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you.For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn’t believe him. Tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; but you, when you saw it, didn’t even change your minds then and believe him.

I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said,‘ John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’

You sent messengers to John, and he testified to the truth.I don’t receive human testimony, but I say these things so that you may be saved.John was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.

for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit in a few days.”

And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,to give his people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins.Because of our God’s merciful compassion, the dawn from on high will visit usto shine on those who live in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
