Paul said,“ John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”

Of this man’s seed hath God according to promise brought unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus;when John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.And as John was fulfilling his course, he said, What suppose ye that I am? I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire:whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing- floor; and he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.

He also said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.But what think ye? A man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to- day in the vineyard.And he answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented himself, and went.And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.Which of the two did the will of his father? They say, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, that the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not; but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye saw it, did not even repent yourselves afterward, that ye might believe him.

And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit.

Ye have sent unto John, and he hath borne witness unto the truth.But the witness which I receive is not from man: howbeit I say these things, that ye may be saved.He was the lamp that burneth and shineth; and ye were willing to rejoice for a season in his light.

For John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days hence.

Yea and thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Most High: For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to make ready his ways;To give knowledge of salvation unto his people In the remission of their sins,Because of the tender mercy of our God, Whereby the dayspring from on high shall visit us,To shine upon them that sit in darkness and the shadow of death; To guide our feet into the way of peace.
