保羅站在亞略巴古當中，說：「諸位雅典人！我看你們凡事很敬畏鬼神。我到處走走的時候，仔細觀察你們所敬拜的，發現一座壇，上面寫着『獻給未識之神明』。你們所不認識而敬拜的，我現在向你們宣告：他是創造宇宙和其中萬物的神；他既是天地的主，就不住在人手所造的殿宇裏，也不用人手去服侍，好像缺少甚麼似的；自己倒將生命、氣息、萬物賜給萬人。他從一人造出萬族，居住在全地面上，並且預先定準他們的年限和所住的疆界，為要使他們尋求神，或者可以揣摩而找到他，其實他離我們各人不遠。我們生活、行動、存在都在於他。就如你們的詩人也有人說：『我們也是他所生的。』既然我們是神所生的，就不應該以為神的神性像人用手藝和心思所雕刻的金、銀、石像一般。世人蒙昧無知的時候，神並不追究，如今卻吩咐各處的人都要悔改。因為他已經定了日子，要藉着他所設立的人按公義審判天下，並且使他從死人中復活，給萬人作可信的憑據。」

但洗魯雅的兒子亞比篩幫助大衛攻擊非利士人，殺死了他。當日，大衛的人向大衛起誓說：「你不可再與我們一同出戰，免得以色列的燈熄滅了。」

保羅說：「我本是猶太人，生在基利家的大數，並不是無名小城的公民。求你准我對百姓說話。」

大衛把軍兵分為三隊：三分之一在約押手下，三分之一在洗魯雅的兒子約押弟弟亞比篩手下，三分之一在迦特人以太手下。王對軍兵說：「我必與你們一同出戰。」軍兵卻說：「你不可出戰。若是我們逃跑，敵人不會把心放在我們身上；我們陣亡一半，敵人也不會把心放在我們身上。但現在你一人抵過我們萬人，所以你最好留在城裏支援我們。」

巴拿巴和保羅二位使徒聽見，就撕開衣裳，跳進眾人中間，喊着：「諸位，為甚麼做這些事呢？我們也是人，性情和你們一樣。我們傳福音給你們，是要你們離棄這些虛妄的事，歸向那創造天、地、海和其中萬物的永生的神。他在從前的世代，任憑萬國各行其道；然而他未嘗不為自己留下證據來，就如常行善事，從天降雨，賞賜豐年，使你們飲食飽足，滿心喜樂。」二人說了這些話，總算攔住眾人不獻祭給他們。
