They began to state their case:“ This man has been leading our people astray by telling them not to pay their taxes to the Roman government and by claiming he is the Messiah, a king.”

Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted,“ If you release this man, you are no‘ friend of Caesar.’ Anyone who declares himself a king is a rebel against Caesar.”

“ They are teaching customs that are illegal for us Romans to practice.”

“ The king should know that the Jews who came here to Jerusalem from Babylon are rebuilding this rebellious and evil city. They have already laid the foundation and will soon finish its walls.And the king should know that if this city is rebuilt and its walls are completed, it will be much to your disadvantage, for the Jews will then refuse to pay their tribute, customs, and tolls to you.“ Since we are your loyal subjects and do not want to see the king dishonored in this way, we have sent the king this information.We suggest that a search be made in your ancestors’ records, where you will discover what a rebellious city this has been in the past. In fact, it was destroyed because of its long and troublesome history of revolt against the kings and countries who controlled it.

Paul denied the charges.“ I am not guilty of any crime against the Jewish laws or the Temple or the Roman government,” he said.Then Festus, wanting to please the Jews, asked him,“ Are you willing to go to Jerusalem and stand trial before me there?”But Paul replied,“ No! This is the official Roman court, so I ought to be tried right here. You know very well I am not guilty of harming the Jews.If I have done something worthy of death, I don’t refuse to die. But if I am innocent, no one has a right to turn me over to these men to kill me. I appeal to Caesar!”

But there are some Jews— Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego— whom you have put in charge of the province of Babylon. They pay no attention to you, Your Majesty. They refuse to serve your gods and do not worship the gold statue you have set up.”

Then they told the king,“ That man Daniel, one of the captives from Judah, is ignoring you and your law. He still prays to his God three times a day.”

It is God’s will that your honorable lives should silence those ignorant people who make foolish accusations against you.
