既為天主所生、則不當思天主之體、似金似銀似石、為人工機巧所製、

夫吾人既為天主之裔、則不當妄度天主之神性、有類乎人工技巧所琢之金銀玉石。

“ Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone— an image made by human design and skill.

“ Yes, we are God’s children. So we shouldn’t think that God is made out of gold or silver or stone. He isn’t a statue planned and made by clever people.

Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man.

And since this is true, we shouldn’t think of God as an idol designed by craftsmen from gold or silver or stone.

Since, then, we are God’s offspring, we shouldn’t think that the divine nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image fashioned by human art and imagination.

Therefore, since we are the descendants of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by human skill and thought.

Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and device of man.

Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.They have mouths, but they don’t speak. They have eyes, but they don’t see.They have ears, but they don’t hear. They have noses, but they don’t smell.They have hands, but they don’t feel. They have feet, but they don’t walk, neither do they speak through their throat.Those who make them will be like them; yes, everyone who trusts in them.

“ To whom then will you liken me? Who is my equal?” says the Holy One.

“ You shall not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

Woe to him who says to the wood,‘ Awake!’ or to the mute stone,‘ Arise!’ Shall this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all within it.But Yahweh is in his holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before him!”

“ To whom will you compare me, and consider my equal, and compare me, as if we were the same?Some pour out gold from the bag, and weigh silver in the balance. They hire a goldsmith, and he makes it a god. They fall down— yes, they worship.

Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and marked off the sky with his span, and calculated the dust of the earth in a measuring basket, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?Who has directed Yahweh’s Spirit, or has taught him as his counselor?Who did he take counsel with, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and showed him the way of understanding?Behold, the nations are like a drop in a bucket, and are regarded as a speck of dust on a balance. Behold, he lifts up the islands like a very little thing.Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor its animals sufficient for a burnt offering.All the nations are like nothing before him. They are regarded by him as less than nothing, and vanity.To whom then will you liken God? Or what likeness will you compare to him?A workman has cast an image, and the goldsmith overlays it with gold, and casts silver chains for it.He who is too impoverished for such an offering chooses a tree that will not rot. He seeks a skillful workman to set up a carved image for him that will not be moved.

He received what they handed him, fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made it a molded calf. Then they said,“ These are your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.”

For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse.Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened.Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,and traded the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds, four- footed animals, and creeping things.

Thus they exchanged their glory for an image of a bull that eats grass.

They deck it with silver and with gold. They fasten it with nails and with hammers, so that it can’t move.They are like a palm tree, of turned work, and don’t speak. They must be carried, because they can’t move. Don’t be afraid of them; for they can’t do evil, neither is it in them to do good.”There is no one like you, Yahweh. You are great, and your name is great in might.Who shouldn’t fear you, King of the nations? For it belongs to you. Because among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their royal estate, there is no one like you.But they are together brutish and foolish, instructed by idols! It is just wood.There is silver beaten into plates, which is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the engraver and of the hands of the goldsmith. Their clothing is blue and purple. They are all the work of skillful men.But Yahweh is the true God. He is the living God, and an everlasting King. At his wrath, the earth trembles. The nations aren’t able to withstand his indignation.

Everyone who makes a carved image is vain. The things that they delight in will not profit. Their own witnesses don’t see, nor know, that they may be disappointed.Who has fashioned a god, or molds an image that is profitable for nothing?Behold, all his fellows will be disappointed; and the workmen are mere men. Let them all be gathered together. Let them stand up. They will fear. They will be put to shame together.The blacksmith takes an ax, works in the coals, fashions it with hammers, and works it with his strong arm. He is hungry, and his strength fails; he drinks no water, and is faint.The carpenter stretches out a line. He marks it out with a pencil. He shapes it with planes. He marks it out with compasses, and shapes it like the figure of a man, with the beauty of a man, to reside in a house.He cuts down cedars for himself, and takes the cypress and the oak, and strengthens for himself one among the trees of the forest. He plants a cypress tree, and the rain nourishes it.Then it will be for a man to burn; and he takes some of it, and warms himself. Yes, he burns it, and bakes bread. Yes, he makes a god, and worships it; he makes it a carved image, and falls down to it.He burns part of it in the fire. With part of it, he eats meat. He roasts a roast, and is satisfied. Yes, he warms himself, and says,“ Aha! I am warm. I have seen the fire.”The rest of it he makes into a god, even his engraved image. He bows down to it and worships, and prays to it, and says,“ Deliver me; for you are my god!”They don’t know, neither do they consider: for he has shut their eyes, that they can’t see; and their hearts, that they can’t understand.No one thinks, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say,“ I have burned part of it in the fire. Yes, I have also baked bread on its coals. I have roasted meat and eaten it. Shall I make the rest of it into an abomination? Shall I bow down to a tree trunk?”He feeds on ashes. A deceived heart has turned him aside; and he can’t deliver his soul, nor say,“ Isn’t there a lie in my right hand?”

They say,“ Yah will not see, neither will Jacob’s God consider.”Consider, you senseless among the people; you fools, when will you be wise?He who implanted the ear, won’t he hear? He who formed the eye, won’t he see?
