Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him. Some of them asked,“ What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked,“ He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.

Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also debated with him. Some said,“ What is this ignorant show-off trying to say?” Others replied,“ He seems to be a preacher of foreign deities”— because he was telling the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.

And some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers as well were conversing with him. Some were saying,“ What could this scavenger of tidbits want to say?” Others,“ He seems to be a proclaimer of strange deities,”— because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection.

Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

Where[ is] the wise? where[ is] the scribe? where[ is] the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And when he came to[ his] disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them.

We[ are] fools for Christ’s sake, but ye[ are] wise in Christ; we[ are] weak, but ye[ are] strong; ye[ are] honourable, but we[ are] despised.

And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge[ him] vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things:

Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called[ the synagogue] of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.

Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by[ that] man whom he hath ordained;[ whereof] he hath given assurance unto all[ men], in that he hath raised him from the dead.And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this[ matter].

Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit?[ there is] more hope of a fool than of him.

That Christ should suffer,[ and] that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.
