眾人聽了，就滿腔怒火，喊叫說：「以弗所人偉大的阿蒂米絲！」於是滿城一片混亂。他們抓住與保羅同來的馬其頓人蓋尤斯和亞里達古，一齊衝進劇場。保羅雖然想要進到民眾當中，但門徒們不讓他去。還有一些亞細亞省的官員，是保羅的朋友，也派人勸他不要自己冒險到劇場去。這時候，有人喊這個、有人喊那個，因為集會的人一片混亂，大多數人不知道為了什麼緣故聚集。猶太人把亞歷山大推到前面的時候，人群中有些人要他說話。亞歷山大就揮一下手，想要對民眾申辯。可是大家一認出他是猶太人，就同聲呼喊：「以弗所人偉大的阿蒂米絲！」大約喊了兩個小時。後來，城裡的書記官安撫了民眾，說：「各位以弗所人哪，到底有什麼人不知道以弗所城是偉大阿蒂米絲廟和那從天落下的神像的看守者呢？所以這些事既然是不能否認的，你們就必須冷靜下來，不要做任何妄為的事。你們帶來的這些人，既沒有偷取廟裡的東西，也沒有褻瀆我們的女神。既然如此，如果迪米特斯和與他一起的工匠們要控告誰，法庭是開著的，省長也在，讓他們彼此控告吧！但如果你們有什麼別的要求，要在合法的集會中解決。關於今天的事，本來沒有正當的理由，我們實際上就有被控告為暴亂的危險。我們無法對這次騷動做出交代。」說了這些話，他就遣散了集會的人。

伽利奧任亞該亞省長的時候，猶太人一致起來攻擊保羅，把他帶到審判臺前，

但那些不肯信從的猶太人嫉妒了，就招聚一些市井無賴，成群結夥，擾亂城市。他們闖進耶森的家，搜尋保羅和賽拉斯，要把他們帶到民眾那裡。

可是保羅對他們說：「我們是羅馬公民，並沒有被定罪，他們卻當眾打我們，把我們投進監獄。現在他們還要悄悄地把我們趕出去嗎？當然不行！讓他們親自來領我們出去！」

眾人聽保羅講到這句話，就高聲說：「這樣的人，把他從地上除掉，因為他不該活著！」他們喊叫，拋著衣服，向空中揚起塵土。千夫長下令把保羅押進營樓，吩咐鞭打拷問他，要了解民眾是因什麼理由向他這樣一直喊叫。當士兵們用皮條捆上保羅的時候，他對站在旁邊的百夫長說：「你們鞭打一個沒有被定罪的羅馬公民，可以嗎？」百夫長聽了，就來到千夫長面前，報告說：「你要做什麼呢？要知道，這個人是羅馬公民。」

於是全城的人都被煽動了，民眾一起跑來，抓住保羅，把他拖出聖殿，殿門立刻關上了。在他們想殺保羅的時候，有消息上報到軍團的千夫長，說全耶路撒冷都混亂了。

於是彼拉多給他們釋放了巴拉巴，然後將耶穌鞭打了，把他交出去釘上十字架。

就叫來使徒們，鞭打了以後，吩咐他們不可再奉耶穌的名講說，然後把他們釋放了。

你們要提防人們，因為他們將要把你們送交議會，並且在他們的會堂裡鞭打你們。
