他們聽了，怒氣沖沖喊著說：“以弗所人的女神，偉大的亞底米啊！”全城騷動起來，他們捉住了保羅的旅伴馬其頓人該猶和亞里達古，齊心衝進了劇場。保羅想要到人群當中去，門徒卻不許。還有幾位亞西亞的首長，是保羅的朋友，派人來勸他，不要冒險到劇場裡去。那時大家叫這個喊那個，亂成一團，大多數的人都不知道聚集的原因。猶太人把亞歷山大推到前面，群眾中有人把這事的因由告訴他。亞歷山大作了一個手勢，要向民眾申辯。大家一認出他是猶太人，就異口同聲高呼：“以弗所人的女神，偉大的亞底米啊！”喊了約有兩個鐘頭。後來，書記官安撫群眾說：“以弗所人哪！誰不知道你們的城，是看守大亞底米的廟，又是看守宙斯那裡降下的神像的呢？這些事既然是駁不倒的，你們就應當平心靜氣，不可輕舉妄動。你們帶來的這些人，既沒有行劫廟宇，也沒有褻瀆我們的女神。如果低米丟和同他一起的技工要控告誰，大可以告上法庭，或呈交總督；讓他們彼此控告好了。如果還有其他的事件，可以在合法的集會裡，謀求解決。今天的動亂，本來是無緣無故的，我們可能有被控告的危險；關於這次的騷動，我們實在無法解釋。”說了這些話，就把群眾解散了。

當迦流作亞該亞省長的時候，猶太人一致起來攻擊保羅，拉他到審判臺前，

但猶太人嫉妒起來，招聚了一些市井流氓，糾合成群，騷動全城，衝進了耶孫的家，搜索保羅和西拉，要把他們交給民眾。

保羅對他們說：“我們是羅馬人，還沒有定罪，他們就公開打我們，又放在監裡；現在要私下趕我們出去嗎？不行！他們應當親自來，領我們出去！”

眾人聽見他說到這句話，就高聲說：“這樣的人應該從地上除掉，不應該活著！”大家正在喊叫著，拋擲衣服，向空中揚灰撒土的時候，千夫長下令把保羅帶到營樓去，吩咐人用鞭子拷問他，要知道群眾為甚麼這樣向他喊叫。士兵正用皮帶綁他的時候，保羅對站在旁邊的百夫長說：“你們鞭打一個還沒有定罪的羅馬公民，是合法的嗎？”百夫長聽了，就去報告千夫長，說：“這個人是羅馬公民，你要怎麼辦呢？”

於是全城震動，民眾一齊跑來，捉住保羅，拉出殿外，殿門就立刻關起來了。他們正想殺他的時候，有人報告營部的千夫長，說：“整個耶路撒冷都亂了！”

於是彼拉多給他們釋放了巴拉巴；他把耶穌鞭打了，就交給他們釘十字架。

就傳使徒進來，鞭打一頓，禁止他們奉耶穌的名傳講，就把他們釋放了。

你們要小心，因為有人要把你們送交公議會，並要在會堂裡鞭打你們；
