眾人聽後，怒氣填胸，高聲喊叫：「以弗所人的亞底米女神真偉大！」全城陷入一片混亂。眾人抓住保羅的兩個同伴——馬其頓人該猶和亞里達古，拖著他們衝進戲院。保羅想進去，但門徒不許他去。他的好友——亞細亞的幾位官員也派人勸他別冒險進入戲院。這時，戲院裡面的人都在大喊大叫，混亂不堪。其實大部分人根本不知道自己為什麼聚在那裡。這時，人群中的猶太人把亞歷山大推到前面，請他解釋。亞歷山大舉手示意大家安靜，聽他發言。但眾人認出他是個猶太人，便又開始一起高呼：「以弗所人的亞底米女神真偉大！」這樣喊了兩個小時。最後，城裡的書記官出面調停，說：「各位以弗所市民，誰不知道以弗所城守護著亞底米女神廟和從宙斯那裡掉下來的神像呢？既然這是無可否認的事實，你們就該安靜，不可魯莽行事。你們帶來的這些人既沒有偷廟裡的東西，也沒有褻瀆我們的女神。如果底米丟和他的同行要控告誰，大可到法庭或總督那裡提出訴訟。倘若你們還有其他的要求，也可以通過合法的會議解決。今天的騷亂實在沒有道理，難免會被查問，到時候我們很難交代。」說完，便叫眾人散去。

迦流出任亞該亞總督時，猶太人聯合起來攻擊保羅，把他拉上法庭，

那些不信主的猶太人卻妒火中燒，他們召集了一群市井無賴，在城裡引發騷亂，闖進耶孫的家企圖把保羅和西拉揪出來示眾。

保羅卻說：「我們是羅馬公民，他們不經審訊就當眾打我們，又把我們關進牢裡，現在卻想偷偷打發掉我們嗎？這樣不行，叫他們親自來領我們出去！」

眾人一聽到這裡，就高喊：「從世上除掉這樣的人！他不配活著！」百姓咆哮著脫掉外衣，揚起塵土。千夫長下令把保羅押回營房，預備鞭打拷問他，要查出眾人向他咆哮的緣由。他們把保羅綁起來正要鞭打，保羅問旁邊的百夫長：「未經定罪就拷打羅馬公民合法嗎？」百夫長一聽，立刻去稟告千夫長說：「你看該怎麼辦？這人是羅馬公民。」

消息一傳開，全城轟動。眾人衝進聖殿把保羅拉出來，隨即關上殿門。正當他們要殺保羅的時候，有人把耶路撒冷發生騷亂的消息報告給羅馬軍營的千夫長，

於是，彼拉多為他們釋放了巴拉巴，下令將耶穌鞭打後，帶出去釘十字架。

公會採納了他的意見，於是把使徒召回來打了一頓，再次警告他們不可奉耶穌的名傳道，才放了他們。
