After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them:“ Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.

After they had talked it over, Peter got up and spoke to them.“ Brothers,” he said,“ you know that some time ago God chose me. He appointed me to take the good news to the Gentiles. He wanted them to hear the good news and believe.

After Paul and Barnabas had engaged them in serious argument and debate, Paul and Barnabas and some others were appointed to go up to the apostles and elders in Jerusalem about this issue.

On the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel for the uncircumcised, just as Peter was for the circumcised,since the one at work in Peter for an apostleship to the circumcised was also at work in me for the Gentiles.When James, Cephas, and John— those recognized as pillars— acknowledged the grace that had been given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to me and Barnabas, agreeing that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.

So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the message about Christ.But I ask,“ Did they not hear?” Yes, they did: Their voice has gone out to the whole earth, and their words to the ends of the world.

Get up, go downstairs, and go with them with no doubts at all, because I have sent them.”

In this way God fulfilled what he had predicted through all the prophets— that his Messiah would suffer.

“ Yet the LORD God of Israel chose me out of all my father’s family to be king over Israel forever. For he chose Judah as leader, and from the house of Judah, my father’s family, and from my father’s sons, he was pleased to make me king over all Israel.And out of all my sons— for the LORD has given me many sons— he has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the LORD’s kingdom over Israel.

You said through the Holy Spirit, by the mouth of our father David your servant: Why do the Gentiles rage and the peoples plot futile things?

John responded,“ No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven.

Do everything without grumbling and arguing,

You did not choose me, but I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you.

Then they prayed,“ You, Lord, know everyone’s hearts; show which of these two you have chosen

But I consider my life of no value to myself; my purpose is to finish my course and the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of God’s grace.

And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will have been loosed in heaven.”

The Spirit told me to accompany them with no doubts at all. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we went into the man’s house.He reported to us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying,‘ Send to Joppa, and call for Simon, who is also named Peter.He will speak a message to you by which you and all your household will be saved.’“ As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came down on them, just as on us at the beginning.I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said,‘ John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’If, then, God gave them the same gift that he also gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, how could I possibly hinder God?”When they heard this they became silent. And they glorified God, saying,“ So then, God has given repentance resulting in life even to the Gentiles.”

Then the LORD reached out his hand, touched my mouth, and told me: I have now filled your mouth with my words.

As they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,“ Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”

Therefore send someone to Joppa and invite Simon here, who is also named Peter. He is lodging in Simon the tanner’s house by the sea.’So I immediately sent for you, and it was good of you to come. So now we are all in the presence of God to hear everything you have been commanded by the Lord.”Peter began to speak:“ Now I truly understand that God doesn’t show favoritism,but in every nation the person who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.He sent the message to the Israelites, proclaiming the good news of peace through Jesus Christ— he is Lord of all.You know the events that took place throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John preached:how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how he went about doing good and healing all who were under the tyranny of the devil, because God was with him.We ourselves are witnesses of everything he did in both the Judean country and in Jerusalem, and yet they killed him by hanging him on a tree.God raised up this man on the third day and caused him to be seen,not by all the people, but by us whom God appointed as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be the judge of the living and the dead.All the prophets testify about him that through his name everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins.”While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came down on all those who heard the message.The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were amazed because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.For they heard them speaking in tongues and declaring the greatness of God. Then Peter responded,“ Can anyone withhold water and prevent these people from being baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?”He commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay for a few days.

Now go! I will help you speak and I will teach you what to say.”

Now send men to Joppa and call for Simon, who is also named Peter.He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.”

They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company, and Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed off to Cyprus.

But the Lord said to him,“ Go, for this man is my chosen instrument to take my name to Gentiles, kings, and Israelites.

“ Brothers and sisters, it was necessary that the Scripture be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit through the mouth of David foretold about Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.
