You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David.And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!”

I have sworn an oath to David, and in my holiness I cannot lie:His dynasty will go on forever; his kingdom will endure as the sun.It will be as eternal as the moon, my faithful witness in the sky!” InterludeBut now you have rejected him and cast him off. You are angry with your anointed king.You have renounced your covenant with him; you have thrown his crown in the dust.You have broken down the walls protecting him and ruined every fort defending him.Everyone who comes along has robbed him, and he has become a joke to his neighbors.You have strengthened his enemies and made them all rejoice.You have made his sword useless and refused to help him in battle.You have ended his splendor and overturned his throne.You have made him old before his time and publicly disgraced him. How long will your anger burn like fire?Remember how short my life is, how empty and futile this human existence!No one can live forever; all will die. No one can escape the power of the grave. InterludeLord, where is your unfailing love? You promised it to David with a faithful pledge.

When all Israel realized that the king had refused to listen to them, they responded,“ Down with the dynasty of David! We have no interest in the son of Jesse. Back to your homes, O Israel! Look out for your own house, O David!” So the people of Israel returned home.

starting from the time I appointed judges to rule my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies.“‘ Furthermore, the Lord declares that he will make a house for you— a dynasty of kings!For when you die and are buried with your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, your own offspring, and I will make his kingdom strong.He is the one who will build a house— a temple— for my name. And I will secure his royal throne forever.I will be his father, and he will be my son. If he sins, I will correct and discipline him with the rod, like any father would do.But my favor will not be taken from him as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from your sight.Your house and your kingdom will continue before me for all time, and your throne will be secure forever.’”

For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!

“ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will take a branch from the top of a tall cedar, and I will plant it on the top of Israel’s highest mountain.It will become a majestic cedar, sending forth its branches and producing seed. Birds of every sort will nest in it, finding shelter in the shade of its branches.And all the trees will know that it is I, the Lord, who cuts the tall tree down and makes the short tree grow tall. It is I who makes the green tree wither and gives the dead tree new life. I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will do what I said!”

But afterward I will return and have compassion on all of them. I will bring them home to their own lands again, each nation to its own possession.

Two thirds of the people in the land will be cut off and die,” says the Lord.“ But one third will be left in the land.

As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream.“ Joseph, son of David,” the angel said,“ do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means‘ God is with us.’”When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife.But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.

“ Have you noticed what people are saying?—‘ The Lord chose Judah and Israel and then abandoned them!’ They are sneering and saying that Israel is not worthy to be counted as a nation.But this is what the Lord says: I would no more reject my people than I would change my laws that govern night and day, earth and sky.I will never abandon the descendants of Jacob or David, my servant, or change the plan that David’s descendants will rule the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Instead, I will restore them to their land and have mercy on them.”

He has sent us a mighty Savior from the royal line of his servant David,just as he promised through his holy prophets long ago.
