SelahHow long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your wrath burn like fire?Remember how short my time is! For what vanity you have created all the children of man!What man can live and never see death? Who can deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? SelahLord, where is your steadfast love of old, which by your faithfulness you swore to David?

And when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king,“ What portion do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, David.” So Israel went to their tents.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Thus says the Lord God:“ I myself will take a sprig from the lofty top of the cedar and will set it out. I will break off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I myself will plant it on a high and lofty mountain.On the mountain height of Israel will I plant it, that it may bear branches and produce fruit and become a noble cedar. And under it will dwell every kind of bird; in the shade of its branches birds of every sort will nest.And all the trees of the field shall know that I am the Lord; I bring low the high tree, and make high the low tree, dry up the green tree, and make the dry tree flourish. I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it.”

And after I have plucked them up, I will again have compassion on them, and I will bring them again each to his heritage and each to his land.

In the whole land, declares the Lord, two thirds shall be cut off and perish, and one third shall be left alive.

But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying,“ Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:“ Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel”( which means, God with us).When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife,but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

“ Have you not observed that these people are saying,‘ The Lord has rejected the two clans that he chose’? Thus they have despised my people so that they are no longer a nation in their sight.Thus says the Lord: If I have not established my covenant with day and night and the fixed order of heaven and earth,then I will reject the offspring of Jacob and David my servant and will not choose one of his offspring to rule over the offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes and will have mercy on them.”

and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David,as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
