Certain people came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the believers:“ Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.”

Certain people came down from Judea to Antioch. Here is what they were teaching the believers.“ Moses commanded you to be circumcised,” they said.“ If you aren’t, you can’t be saved.”

But some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers,“ Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.”

While Paul and Barnabas were at Antioch of Syria, some men from Judea arrived and began to teach the believers:“ Unless you are circumcised as required by the law of Moses, you cannot be saved.”

But some of the believers from the party of the Pharisees stood up and said,“ It is necessary to circumcise them and to command them to keep the law of Moses!”

For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision accomplishes anything; what matters is faith working through love.

Christ has liberated us to be free. Stand firm then and don’t submit again to a yoke of slavery.Take note! I, Paul, tell you that if you get yourselves circumcised, Christ will not benefit you at all.Again I testify to every man who gets himself circumcised that he is obligated to keep the entire law.You who are trying to be justified by the law are alienated from Christ; you have fallen from grace.

Because we have heard that some without our authorization went out from us and troubled you with their words and unsettled your hearts,

The flesh of his foreskin must be circumcised on the eighth day.

Was anyone already circumcised when he was called? He should not undo his circumcision. Was anyone called while uncircumcised? He should not get circumcised.Circumcision does not matter and uncircumcision does not matter, but keeping God’s commands does.

But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face because he stood condemned.For he regularly ate with the Gentiles before certain men came from James. However, when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, because he feared those from the circumcision party.Then the rest of the Jews joined his hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.But when I saw that they were deviating from the truth of the gospel, I told Cephas in front of everyone,“ If you, who are a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel Gentiles to live like Jews?”

For even the circumcised don’t keep the law themselves; however, they want you to be circumcised in order to boast about your flesh.But as for me, I will never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. The world has been crucified to me through the cross, and I to the world.For both circumcision and uncircumcision mean nothing; what matters instead is a new creation.May peace come to all those who follow this standard, and mercy to the Israel of God!

For we heard him say that Jesus, this Nazarene, will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us.”

You were also circumcised in Him with a circumcision not done with hands, by putting off the body of flesh, in the circumcision of the Messiah.Having been buried with Him in baptism, you were also raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

Then the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, decided to select men who were among them and to send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas: Judas, called Barsabbas, and Silas, both leading men among the brothers.

Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elemental forces of the world, and not based on Christ.

But not even Titus who was with me, though he was a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.This issue arose because of false brothers smuggled in, who came in secretly to spy on the freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, in order to enslave us.

Watch out for“ dogs,” watch out for evil workers, watch out for those who mutilate the flesh.For we are the circumcision, the ones who serve by the Spirit of God, boast in Christ Jesus, and do not put confidence in the flesh—

This is My covenant, which you are to keep, between Me and you and your offspring after you: Every one of your males must be circumcised.You must circumcise the flesh of your foreskin to serve as a sign of the covenant between Me and you.Throughout your generations, every male among you at eight days old is to be circumcised. This includes a slave born in your house and one purchased with money from any foreigner. The one who is not your offspring,a slave born in your house, as well as one purchased with money, must be circumcised. My covenant will be marked in your flesh as an everlasting covenant.If any male is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that man will be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”God said to Abraham,“ As for your wife Sarai, do not call her Sarai, for Sarah will be her name.I will bless her; indeed, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she will produce nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”Abraham fell facedown. Then he laughed and said to himself,“ Can a child be born to a hundred-year-old man? Can Sarah, a ninety-year-old woman, give birth?”So Abraham said to God,“ If only Ishmael were acceptable to You!”But God said,“ No. Your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will name him Isaac. I will confirm My covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his future offspring.As for Ishmael, I have heard you. I will certainly bless him; I will make him fruitful and will multiply him greatly. He will father 12 tribal leaders, and I will make him into a great nation.But I will confirm My covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this time next year.”When He finished talking with him, God withdrew from Abraham.Then Abraham took his son Ishmael and all the slaves born in his house or purchased with his money— every male among the members of Abraham’s household— and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskin on that very day, just as God had said to him.Abraham was 99 years old when the flesh of his foreskin was circumcised,and his son Ishmael was 13 years old when the flesh of his foreskin was circumcised.On that same day Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised.And all the men of his household— both slaves born in his house and those purchased with money from a foreigner— were circumcised with him.

Then after 14 years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along also.

How joyful is the man the Lord will never charge with sin!Is this blessing only for the circumcised, then? Or is it also for the uncircumcised? For we say, Faith was credited to Abraham for righteousness.In what way then was it credited— while he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while he was circumcised, but uncircumcised.And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while still uncircumcised. This was to make him the father of all who believe but are not circumcised, so that righteousness may be credited to them also.And he became the father of the circumcised, who are not only circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith our father Abraham had while he was still uncircumcised.

When they had been sent on their way by the church, they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, explaining in detail the conversion of the Gentiles, and they created great joy among all the brothers.

Therefore, don’t let anyone judge you in regard to food and drink or in the matter of a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day.

When they heard it, they glorified God and said,“ You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are who have believed, and they are all zealous for the law.

“ Consider this: Moses has given you circumcision— not that it comes from Moses but from the fathers— and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.
