We sent Timothy, our brother and fellow worker for God in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen you and encourage you about your faith,so that no one would be shaken by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this.For in fact when we were with you, we were telling you in advance that we would suffer affliction, and so it has happened, as you well know.

Remember what I told you,‘ A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they obeyed my word, they will obey yours too.

He passed through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.

“ You are the ones who have remained with me in my trials.Thus I grant to you a kingdom, just as my Father granted to me,

Then Jesus said to those Judeans who had believed him,“ If you continue to follow my teaching, you are really my disciplesand you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

The word of God continued to spread, the number of disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly, and a large group of priests became obedient to the faith.

Jesus answered,“ I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.”

Dear friends, do not be astonished that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as though something strange were happening to you.But rejoice in the degree that you have shared in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice and be glad.If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, who is the Spirit of God, rests on you.But let none of you suffer as a murderer or thief or criminal or as a troublemaker.But if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but glorify God that you bear such a name.

“ Brother will hand over brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise against parents and have them put to death.And you will be hated by everyone because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

“ I have told you all these things so that you will not fall away.They will put you out of the synagogue, yet a time is coming when the one who kills you will think he is offering service to God.

Dear friends, although I have been eager to write to you about our common salvation, I now feel compelled instead to write to encourage you to contend earnestly for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints.
