But while John was completing his mission, he said repeatedly,‘ What do you think I am? I am not he. But look, one is coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet!’

約翰職事將竣、曰、爾曹意我為誰、我非基督、彼後我而來、其足之履、我亦不堪解、

迨其使命將畢、如望恆曰：「爾等以吾為誰？實非基督；惟有後我來者、吾雖為之解履、猶愧未稱、」

As John was completing his work, he said:‘ Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one you are looking for. But there is one coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’

John was coming to the end of his work.‘ Who do you suppose I am?’ he said.‘ I am not the one you are looking for. But there is someone coming after me. I am not good enough to untie his sandals.’

And as John was finishing his course, he said,‘ What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but behold, after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’

As John was finishing his ministry he asked,‘ Do you think I am the Messiah? No, I am not! But he is coming soon— and I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the sandals on his feet.’

Now as John was completing his mission, he said,‘ Who do you think I am? I am not the one. But one is coming after me, and I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet.’

And while John was completing his course, he kept saying,‘ What do you suppose that I am? I am not He. But behold, one is coming after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’

And as John was finishing his course, he said,‘ Who do you think I am? I am not He. But behold, there comes One after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to loose.’

And as John was fulfilling his course, he said, What suppose ye that I am? I am not he. But behold, there cometh one after me the shoes of whose feet I am not worthy to unloose.

Then as John was completing his life’s work, he said,‘ Who do you think I am? I am not the One. But look! Someone is coming after me, and I am not worthy to untie the sandals on His feet.’

And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not[ he]. But, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of[ his] feet I am not worthy to loose.

As John was fulfilling his course, he said,‘ What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. But behold, one comes after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’

“ I baptize you with water, for repentance, but the one coming after me is more powerful than I am– I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

He proclaimed,“ One more powerful than I am is coming after me; I am not worthy to bend down and untie the strap of his sandals.

But I do not consider my life worth anything to myself, so that I may finish my task and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the good news of God’s grace.

John answered them,“ I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not recognize,who is coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandal!”

He confessed– he did not deny but confessed–“ I am not the Christ!”So they asked him,“ Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said,“ I am not!”“ Are you the Prophet?” He answered,“ No!”Then they said to him,“ Who are you? Tell us so that we can give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”John said,“ I am the voice of one shouting in the wilderness,‘ Make straight the way for the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

While the people were filled with anticipation and they all wondered whether perhaps John could be the Christ,John answered them all,“ I baptize you with water, but one more powerful than I am is coming– I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Jesus said to them,“ My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to complete his work.

For we do not proclaim ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake.

On the next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,“ Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith!

Gazing at Jesus as he walked by, he said,“ Look, the Lamb of God!”

When they have completed their testimony, the beast that comes up from the abyss will make war on them and conquer them and kill them.

After this Jesus, realizing that by this time everything was completed, said( in order to fulfill the scripture),“ I am thirsty!”A jar full of sour wine was there, so they put a sponge soaked in sour wine on a branch of hyssop and lifted it to his mouth.When he had received the sour wine, Jesus said,“ It is completed!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Paul said,“ John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.”

John replied,“ No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven.You yourselves can testify that I said,‘ I am not the Christ,’ but rather,‘ I have been sent before him.’The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands by and listens for him, rejoices greatly when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. This then is my joy, and it is complete.

I have both seen and testified that this man is the Chosen One of God.”

But when Herod heard this, he said,“ John, whom I beheaded, has been raised!”For Herod himself had sent men, arrested John, and bound him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod had married her.For John had repeatedly told Herod,“ It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”So Herodias nursed a grudge against him and wanted to kill him. But she could notbecause Herod stood in awe of John and protected him, since he knew that John was a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard him, he was thoroughly baffled, and yet he liked to listen to John.But a suitable day came, when Herod gave a banquet on his birthday for his court officials, military commanders, and leaders of Galilee.When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl,“ Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you.”He swore to her,“ Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”So she went out and said to her mother,“ What should I ask for?” Her mother said,“ The head of John the baptizer.”Immediately she hurried back to the king and made her request:“ I want the head of John the Baptist on a platter immediately.”Although it grieved the king deeply, he did not want to reject her request because of his oath and his guests.So the king sent an executioner at once to bring John’s head, and he went and beheaded John in prison.He brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.

The person who speaks on his own authority desires to receive honor for himself; the one who desires the honor of the one who sent him is a man of integrity, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
