From there, when his father was dead, God moved him into this land, where you are now living.He gave him no inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on. He promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his offspring after him, when he still had no child.God spoke in this way: that his offspring would live as aliens in a strange land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years.‘ I will judge the nation to which they will be in bondage,’ said God,‘ and after that they will come out, and serve me in this place.’He gave him the covenant of circumcision. So Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day. Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.“ The patriarchs, moved with jealousy against Joseph, sold him into Egypt. God was with him,and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. He made him governor over Egypt and all his house.Now a famine came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction. Our fathers found no food.But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers the first time.On the second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph’s race was revealed to Pharaoh.Joseph sent and summoned Jacob, his father, and all his relatives, seventy- five souls.Jacob went down into Egypt and he died, himself and our fathers,and they were brought back to Shechem, and laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price in silver from the children of Hamor of Shechem.“ But as the time of the promise came close which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,until there arose a different king, who didn’t know Joseph.The same took advantage of our race, and mistreated our fathers, and forced them to throw out their babies, so that they wouldn’t stay alive.At that time Moses was born, and was exceedingly handsome. He was nourished three months in his father’s house.When he was thrown out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up and reared him as her own son.Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians. He was mighty in his words and works.But when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.Seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him who was oppressed, striking the Egyptian.He supposed that his brothers understood that God, by his hand, was giving them deliverance; but they didn’t understand.“ The day following, he appeared to them as they fought, and urged them to be at peace again, saying,‘ Sirs, you are brothers. Why do you wrong one another?’But he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away, saying,‘ Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?Do you want to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’Moses fled at this saying, and became a stranger in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.“ When forty years were fulfilled, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight. As he came close to see, a voice of the Lord came to him,‘ I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ Moses trembled, and dared not look.The Lord said to him,‘ Take off your sandals, for the place where you stand is holy ground.I have surely seen the affliction of my people that is in Egypt, and have heard their groaning. I have come down to deliver them. Now come, I will send you into Egypt.’“ This Moses, whom they refused, saying,‘ Who made you a ruler and a judge?’— God has sent him as both a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.This man led them out, having worked wonders and signs in Egypt, in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.This is that Moses, who said to the children of Israel,‘ The Lord our God will raise up a prophet for you from among your brothers, like me.’This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness with the angel that spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, who received living revelations to give to us,to whom our fathers wouldn’t be obedient, but rejected him, and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,saying to Aaron,‘ Make us gods that will go before us, for as for this Moses, who led us out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.’They made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their hands.But God turned, and gave them up to serve the army of the sky, as it is written in the book of the prophets,‘ Did you offer to me slain animals and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?You took up the tabernacle of Moloch, the star of your god Rephan, the figures which you made to worship. I will carry you away beyond Babylon.’“ Our fathers had the tabernacle of the testimony in the wilderness, even as he who spoke to Moses commanded him to make it according to the pattern that he had seen;which also our fathers, in their turn, brought in with Joshua when they entered into the possession of the nations, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers, to the days of David,who found favor in the sight of God, and asked to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.But Solomon built him a house.However, the Most High doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says,‘ heaven is my throne, and the earth a footstool for my feet. What kind of house will you build me?’ says the Lord.‘ Or what is the place of my rest?Didn’t my hand make all these things?’“ You stiff- necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit! As your fathers did, so you do.Which of the prophets didn’t your fathers persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you have now become betrayers and murderers.You received the law as it was ordained by angels, and didn’t keep it!”

I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God to you and to your offspring after you.I will give to you, and to your offspring after you, the land where you are traveling, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession. I will be their God.”

But Yahweh has taken you, and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be to him a people of inheritance, as it is today.

You are Yahweh, the God who chose Abram, brought him out of Ur of the Chaldees, gave him the name of Abraham,found his heart faithful before you, and made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, to give it to his offspring, and have performed your words; for you are righteous.“ You saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heard their cry by the Red Sea,and showed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, and against all his servants, and against all the people of his land; for you knew that they dealt proudly against them, and made a name for yourself, as it is today.You divided the sea before them, so that they went through the middle of the sea on the dry land; and you cast their pursuers into the depths, as a stone into the mighty waters.Moreover, in a pillar of cloud you led them by day; and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light in the way in which they should go.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to Yahweh, and said,“ I will sing to Yahweh, for he has triumphed gloriously. He has thrown the horse and his rider into the sea.Yah is my strength and song. He has become my salvation. This is my God, and I will praise him; my father’s God, and I will exalt him.Yahweh is a man of war. Yahweh is his name.He has cast Pharaoh’s chariots and his army into the sea. His chosen captains are sunk in the Red Sea.The deeps cover them. They went down into the depths like a stone.Your right hand, Yahweh, is glorious in power. Your right hand, Yahweh, dashes the enemy in pieces.In the greatness of your excellency, you overthrow those who rise up against you. You send out your wrath. It consumes them as stubble.With the blast of your nostrils, the waters were piled up. The floods stood upright as a heap. The deeps were congealed in the heart of the sea.The enemy said,‘ I will pursue. I will overtake. I will divide the plunder. My desire will be satisfied on them. I will draw my sword. My hand will destroy them.’You blew with your wind. The sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters.Who is like you, Yahweh, among the gods? Who is like you, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?You stretched out your right hand. The earth swallowed them.“ You, in your loving kindness, have led the people that you have redeemed. You have guided them in your strength to your holy habitation.The peoples have heard. They tremble. Pangs have taken hold of the inhabitants of Philistia.Then the chiefs of Edom were dismayed. Trembling takes hold of the mighty men of Moab. All the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away.Terror and dread falls on them. By the greatness of your arm they are as still as a stone, until your people pass over, Yahweh, until the people you have purchased pass over.You will bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of your inheritance, the place, Yahweh, which you have made for yourself to dwell in; the sanctuary, Lord, which your hands have established.Yahweh will reign forever and ever.”For the horses of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and Yahweh brought back the waters of the sea on them; but the children of Israel walked on dry land in the middle of the sea.Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand; and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dances.Miriam answered them,“ Sing to Yahweh, for he has triumphed gloriously. The horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.”

you offspring of Abraham, his servant, you children of Jacob, his chosen ones.He is Yahweh, our God. His judgments are in all the earth.He has remembered his covenant forever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations,the covenant which he made with Abraham, his oath to Isaac,and confirmed it to Jacob for a statute; to Israel for an everlasting covenant,saying,“ To you I will give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance,”when they were but a few men in number, yes, very few, and foreigners in it.

Woe to us! Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods that struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.

Our fathers didn’t understand your wonders in Egypt. They didn’t remember the multitude of your loving kindnesses, but were rebellious at the sea, even at the Red Sea.Nevertheless he saved them for his name’s sake, that he might make his mighty power known.He rebuked the Red Sea also, and it was dried up; so he led them through the depths, as through a desert.He saved them from the hand of him who hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.The waters covered their adversaries. There was not one of them left.

In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and in his pity he redeemed them. He bore them, and carried them all the days of old.But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. Therefore he turned and became their enemy, and he himself fought against them.Then he remembered the days of old, Moses and his people, saying,“ Where is he who brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of his flock? Where is he who put his Holy Spirit among them?”Who caused his glorious arm to be at Moses’ right hand? Who divided the waters before them, to make himself an everlasting name?Who led them through the depths, like a horse in the wilderness, so that they didn’t stumble?As the livestock that go down into the valley, Yahweh’s Spirit caused them to rest. So you led your people to make yourself a glorious name.

It shall be, when your son asks you in time to come, saying,‘ What is this?’ that you shall tell him,‘ By strength of hand Yahweh brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage.

Your way, God, is in the sanctuary. What god is great like God?You are the God who does wonders. You have made your strength known among the peoples.You have redeemed your people with your arm, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.The waters saw you, God. The waters saw you, and they writhed. The depths also convulsed.The clouds poured out water. The skies resounded with thunder. Your arrows also flashed around.The voice of your thunder was in the whirlwind. The lightnings lit up the world. The earth trembled and shook.Your way was through the sea; your paths through the great waters. Your footsteps were not known.You led your people like a flock, by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Also I brought you up out of the land of Egypt, and led you forty years in the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.

Yahweh said to Moses,“ Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh, for by a strong hand he shall let them go, and by a strong hand he shall drive them out of his land.”God spoke to Moses, and said to him,“ I am Yahweh.I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty; but by my name Yahweh I was not known to them.I have also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their travels, in which they lived as aliens.Moreover I have heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage, and I have remembered my covenant.Therefore tell the children of Israel,‘ I am Yahweh, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm, and with great judgments.I will take you to myself for a people. I will be your God; and you shall know that I am Yahweh your God, who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it to you for a heritage: I am Yahweh.’”Moses spoke so to the children of Israel, but they didn’t listen to Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,“ Go in, speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt, that he let the children of Israel go out of his land.”Moses spoke before Yahweh, saying,“ Behold, the children of Israel haven’t listened to me. How then shall Pharaoh listen to me, when I have uncircumcised lips?”Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, and gave them a command to the children of Israel, and to Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt.These are the heads of their fathers’ houses. The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch, and Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi; these are the families of Reuben.

The children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who didn’t know Joseph.He said to his people,“ Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we.

They didn’t remember his hand, nor the day when he redeemed them from the adversary;how he set his signs in Egypt, his wonders in the field of Zoan,he turned their rivers into blood, and their streams, so that they could not drink.He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.He gave also their increase to the caterpillar, and their labor to the locust.He destroyed their vines with hail, their sycamore fig trees with frost.He gave over their livestock also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.He threw on them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, indignation, and trouble, and a band of angels of evil.He made a path for his anger. He didn’t spare their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence,and struck all the firstborn in Egypt, the chief of their strength in the tents of Ham.But he led out his own people like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.He led them safely, so that they weren’t afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

who performed signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, even to this day, both in Israel and among other men; and made yourself a name, as it is today;and brought your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, with wonders, with a strong hand, with an outstretched arm, and with great terror;

Now I know that Yahweh is greater than all gods because of the way that they treated people arrogantly.”

“ As in the days of your coming out of the land of Egypt, I will show them marvelous things.”The nations will see and be ashamed of all their might. They will lay their hand on their mouth. Their ears will be deaf.

Not for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart do you go in to possess their land; but for the wickedness of these nations Yahweh your God does drive them out from before you, and that he may establish the word which Yahweh swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

Now Yahweh said to Abram,“ Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you.I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great. You will be a blessing.I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who treats you with contempt. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you.”

For you are a holy people to Yahweh your God, and Yahweh has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, above all peoples who are on the face of the earth.

Yet listen now, Jacob my servant, and Israel, whom I have chosen.

For he remembered his holy word, and Abraham, his servant.He brought his people out with joy, his chosen with singing.

Or has God tried to go and take a nation for himself from among another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, by war, by a mighty hand, by an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that Yahweh your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?

It shall be for a sign on your hand, and for symbols between your eyes; for by strength of hand Yahweh brought us out of Egypt.”

“ Don’t consider what this people has spoken, saying,‘ Has Yahweh cast off the two families which he chose?’ Thus they despise my people, that they should be no more a nation before them.”Yahweh says:“ If my covenant of day and night fails, if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth;then I will also cast away the offspring of Jacob, and of David my servant, so that I will not take of his offspring to be rulers over the offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to be reversed and will have mercy on them.”

He did marvelous things in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.He split the sea, and caused them to pass through. He made the waters stand as a heap.

Because he loved your fathers, therefore he chose their offspring after them, and brought you out with his presence, with his great power, out of Egypt;

For I brought you up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage. I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.

“ But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham my friend,You whom I have taken hold of from the ends of the earth, and called from its corners, and said to you,‘ You are my servant, I have chosen you and have not cast you away.’

For Yah has chosen Jacob for himself, Israel for his own possession.

He sent Moses, his servant, and Aaron, whom he had chosen.They performed miracles among them, and wonders in the land of Ham.He sent darkness, and made it dark. They didn’t rebel against his words.He turned their waters into blood, and killed their fish.Their land swarmed with frogs, even in the rooms of their kings.He spoke, and swarms of flies came, and lice in all their borders.He gave them hail for rain, with lightning in their land.He struck their vines and also their fig trees, and shattered the trees of their country.He spoke, and the locusts came with the grasshoppers, without number,ate up every plant in their land, and ate up the fruit of their ground.He struck also all the firstborn in their land, the first fruits of all their manhood.He brought them out with silver and gold. There was not one feeble person among his tribes.Egypt was glad when they departed, for the fear of them had fallen on them.He spread a cloud for a covering, fire to give light in the night.

When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of foreign language,Judah became his sanctuary, Israel his dominion.The sea saw it, and fled. The Jordan was driven back.The mountains skipped like rams, the little hills like lambs.What was it, you sea, that you fled? You Jordan, that you turned back?You mountains, that you skipped like rams; you little hills, like lambs?Tremble, you earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob,who turned the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of waters.
