Then a leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet,

I urge you, dear brothers and sisters, to pay attention to what I have written in this brief exhortation.

When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:“ The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. The people in Jerusalem and their leaders did not recognize Jesus as the one the prophets had spoken about. Instead, they condemned him, and in doing this they fulfilled the prophets’ words that are read every Sabbath.

Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, and everyone in his household believed in the Lord. Many others in Corinth also heard Paul, became believers, and were baptized.

The crowd then grabbed Sosthenes, the leader of the synagogue, and beat him right there in the courtroom. But Gallio paid no attention.

And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

“ Until John the Baptist, the law of Moses and the messages of the prophets were your guides. But now the Good News of the Kingdom of God is preached, and everyone is eager to get in.

“ Brothers and esteemed fathers,” Paul said,“ listen to me as I offer my defense.”

But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them.

Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles,“ Brothers, what should we do?”

If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

At the meeting, after a long discussion, Peter stood and addressed them as follows:“ Brothers, you all know that God chose me from among you some time ago to preach to the Gentiles so that they could hear the Good News and believe.

While there, he encouraged the believers in all the towns he passed through. Then he traveled down to Greece,
