Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet.

Brothers and sisters, I urge you to bear with my word of exhortation, for in fact I have written to you quite briefly.

He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read,and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:“ The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,

The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath.

Crispus, the synagogue leader, and his entire household believed in the Lord; and many of the Corinthians who heard Paul believed and were baptized.

Then the crowd there turned on Sosthenes the synagogue leader and beat him in front of the proconsul; and Gallio showed no concern whatever.

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

“ The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing their way into it.

“ Brothers and fathers, listen now to my defense.”

“ Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.

But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort.

When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles,“ Brothers, what shall we do?”

if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them:“ Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.

He traveled through that area, speaking many words of encouragement to the people, and finally arrived in Greece,

To this he replied:“ Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Harran.
