有些軍人問：「我們該怎麼辦呢？」約翰說：「不可敲詐勒索，自己有糧餉就當知足。」

如果你害怕，可以和你的僕人普拉一起下到敵營，

若主人是基督徒，作奴僕的不可因為同是信徒就不尊敬自己的主人，反而要更好地服侍他，因為這些接受服侍的人是信徒，是主所愛的。你要教導這些事並勉勵眾人。

在凱撒利亞有一位隸屬義大利營的百夫長名叫哥尼流。他和全家都是虔誠敬畏上帝的人，他慷慨賙濟窮人，常常禱告。

亞伯拉罕的僕人聽見這話，就俯伏在地上敬拜耶和華，

因為我有上司，也有部下。我命令我的部下去，他就去；要他來，他就來。我吩咐僕人做什麼事，他一定照辦。」耶穌聽了，感到驚奇，便對跟隨祂的人說：「我實在告訴你們，我在以色列從未見過信心這麼大的人。

亞伯拉罕已經年邁，耶和華在一切的事上都賜福給他。亞伯拉罕對他的老總管說：「請你把手放在我大腿底下，我要你憑耶和華——掌管天地的上帝起誓，你不會找這迦南的女子做我兒子的妻子。你要回到我的家鄉，在我的親族中為以撒物色妻子。」老總管問他：「如果那女子不肯跟我到這裡來，我要把你兒子帶回你的家鄉嗎？」亞伯拉罕說：「你千萬不可帶我的兒子回那裡！因為帶領我離開父家和本鄉的耶和華——天上的主，曾經向我說話，起誓應許把這片土地賜給我的後代。祂必派天使在你前面引路，幫助你在那裡為我兒子找到妻子。如果那女子不肯跟你來，你也算履行了你向我起的誓，只是你不可帶我兒子回那裡。」於是，老總管就把手放在他主人亞伯拉罕的大腿底下，為這事向他起誓。老總管帶著主人的十匹駱駝和各種上好的禮物，啟程前往美索不達米亞，來到拿鶴住的城。

約拿單對拿兵器的年輕人說：「我們去那些未受割禮之人的軍營，也許耶和華會幫助我們。祂使人得勝不在乎人數多少。」拿兵器的人答道：「就照你的意思，我會一心追隨你。」
