Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”So the people asked him, saying,“ What shall we do then?”He answered and said to them,“ He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.”Then tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him,“ Teacher, what shall we do?”And he said to them,“ Collect no more than what is appointed for you.”Likewise the soldiers asked him, saying,“ And what shall we do?” So he said to them,“ Do not intimidate anyone or accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.”Now as the people were in expectation, and all reasoned in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not,John answered, saying to all,“ I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.”And with many other exhortations he preached to the people.

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.As it is written in the Prophets:“ Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.”“ The voice of one crying in the wilderness:‘ Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight.’”John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.And he preached, saying,“ There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose.I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,

after John had first preached, before His coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.And as John was finishing his course, he said,‘ Who do you think I am? I am not He. But behold, there comes One after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to loose.’

These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said,“ Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!This is He of whom I said,‘ After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.”And John bore witness, saying,“ I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me,‘ Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples.And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said,“ Behold the Lamb of God!”The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them,“ What do you seek?” They said to Him,“ Rabbi”( which is to say, when translated, Teacher),“ where are You staying?”He said to them,“ Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day( now it was about the tenth hour).One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him,“ We have found the Messiah”( which is translated, the Christ).And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said,“ You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas”( which is translated, A Stone).The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him,“ Follow Me.”Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.Philip found Nathanael and said to him,“ We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote— Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”And Nathanael said to him,“ Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him,“ Come and see.”Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him,“ Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”Nathanael said to Him,“ How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him,“ Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”Nathanael answered and said to Him,“ Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”Jesus answered and said to him,“ Because I said to you,‘ I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”And He said to him,“ Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
