He put garrisons in the Aramean kingdom of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject to him and brought tribute. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.

He stationed some soldiers in the Aramean kingdom of Damascus. The people of Aram were brought under his rule. They gave him the gifts he required them to bring him. The Lord helped David win his battles everywhere he went.

Soon after this, Jonathan attacked and defeated the garrison of Philistines at Geba. The news spread quickly among the Philistines. So Saul blew the ram’s horn throughout the land, saying,“ Hebrews, hear this! Rise up in revolt!”

“ Let’s go across to the outpost of those pagans,” Jonathan said to his armor bearer.“ Perhaps the Lord will help us, for nothing can hinder the Lord. He can win a battle whether he has many warriors or only a few!”

But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Spread your protection over them, that all who love your name may be filled with joy.For you bless the godly, O Lord; you surround them with your shield of love.

The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life.The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.

He trains my hands for battle; he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow.You have given me your shield of victory. Your right hand supports me; your help has made me great.You have made a wide path for my feet to keep them from slipping.I chased my enemies and caught them; I did not stop until they were conquered.I struck them down so they could not get up; they fell beneath my feet.You have armed me with strength for the battle; you have subdued my enemies under my feet.You placed my foot on their necks. I have destroyed all who hated me.They called for help, but no one came to their rescue. They even cried to the Lord, but he refused to answer.I ground them as fine as dust in the wind. I swept them into the gutter like dirt.You gave me victory over my accusers. You appointed me ruler over nations; people I don’t even know now serve me.As soon as they hear of me, they submit; foreign nations cringe before me.They all lose their courage and come trembling from their strongholds.The Lord lives! Praise to my Rock! May the God of my salvation be exalted!

The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the Lord.

One day Jonathan said to his armor bearer,“ Come on, let’s go over to where the Philistines have their outpost.” But Jonathan did not tell his father what he was doing.

Suddenly, panic broke out in the Philistine army, both in the camp and in the field, including even the outposts and raiding parties. And just then an earthquake struck, and everyone was terrified.

Now is the time! For the Lord has said,‘ I have chosen David to save my people Israel from the hands of the Philistines and from all their other enemies.’”

Praise the Lord, who is my rock. He trains my hands for war and gives my fingers skill for battle.He is my loving ally and my fortress, my tower of safety, my rescuer. He is my shield, and I take refuge in him. He makes the nations submit to me.

He stationed troops in all the fortified towns of Judah, and he assigned additional garrisons to the land of Judah and to the towns of Ephraim that his father, Asa, had captured.

O Sovereign Lord, the strong one who rescued me, you protected me on the day of battle.

David also conquered the land of Moab. He made the people lie down on the ground in a row, and he measured them off in groups with a length of rope. He measured off two groups to be executed for every one group to be spared. The Moabites who were spared became David’s subjects and paid him tribute money.

David was staying in the stronghold at the time, and a Philistine detachment had occupied the town of Bethlehem.
