非利士人攻打以色列。以色列人在非利士人面前逃跑，很多人在基利波山被杀仆倒。非利士人紧追扫罗和他的儿子，杀了扫罗的儿子约拿单、亚比拿达、麦基‧舒亚。攻击扫罗的战事激烈，弓箭手追上他，他被弓箭手射中，伤势很重。扫罗吩咐拿他兵器的人说：“你拔出刀来，把我刺死，免得那些未受割礼的人来刺我，凌辱我。”但拿兵器的人不肯，因为他非常惧怕。于是扫罗拿起刀来，伏在刀上。拿兵器的人见扫罗已死，也伏在刀上跟他一起死。这样，扫罗和他三个儿子，与拿他兵器的人，以及他所有的人，都在那日一起死了。住平原那边和约旦河那边的以色列人，见以色列军兵逃跑，扫罗和他儿子都死了，就弃城逃跑。非利士人前来住在其中。次日，非利士人来剥那些被杀之人的衣服，看见扫罗和他三个儿子仆倒在基利波山。他们割下他的首级，剥了他的盔甲，派人到非利士人之地的四境，报信给他们庙里的偶像和众百姓。他们将扫罗的盔甲放在亚斯她录庙里，把他的尸身钉在伯‧珊的城墙上。
