非利士人與以色列人爭戰，以色列人從非利士人面前逃跑，被殺的人倒在基利波山上。非利士人追上掃羅和他的兒子們，殺死了掃羅的兒子約拿單、亞比拿達和麥基舒亞。掃羅遭到猛烈的攻擊，弓箭手射中了他，他受到射手的重創。掃羅對替他拿兵器的說：「拔出你的刀來，把我刺死！免得這些未受割禮的人來刺死我，折辱我。」但拿兵器的不肯，因為他極其害怕。於是掃羅拿起刀，伏在刀上。替他拿兵器的看見掃羅死了，也伏在自己的刀上，隨掃羅一起死了。這樣，掃羅和他三個兒子，以及替他拿兵器的人，還有他所有的部下，都在那天一同死了。那些在平原對面和約旦河對岸的以色列人，看到以色列人逃跑，並且掃羅和他兒子們死了，他們就棄城逃跑。於是非利士人來住在其中。第二天，非利士人來剝去被殺之人的衣物，發現掃羅和他三個兒子倒在基利波山上。他們就砍下掃羅的頭，剝去他的裝備，然後派人到非利士全地的四境，在他們偶像的廟宇，在民間傳揚這好消息。他們把掃羅的裝備放在亞斯她錄的廟宇裡，把他的屍體釘在伯珊的城牆上。
