David felt guilty after he had numbered the army. David said to the LORD,“ I have sinned greatly by doing this! Now, O LORD, please remove the guilt of your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.”

David looked up and saw the LORD’s messenger standing between the earth and sky with his sword drawn and in his hand, stretched out over Jerusalem. David and the leaders, covered with sackcloth, threw themselves down with their faces to the ground.David said to God,“ Was I not the one who decided to number the army? I am the one who sinned and committed this awful deed! As for these sheep– what have they done? O LORD my God, attack me and my family, but remove the plague from your people!”

If I have sinned– what have I done to you, O watcher of men? Why have you set me as your target? Have I become a burden to you?

Wash away my wrongdoing! Cleanse me of my sin!For I am aware of my rebellious acts; I am forever conscious of my sin.Against you– you above all– I have sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. So you are just when you confront me; you are right when you condemn me.Look, I was guilty of sin from birth, a sinner the moment my mother conceived me.

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we may cease from sinning and live for righteousness. By his wounds you were healed.For you were going astray like sheep but now you have turned back to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

Therefore I despise myself, and I repent in dust and ashes!

“ So now, please let your servant remain as my lord’s slave instead of the boy. As for the boy, let him go back with his brothers.

“ Awake, sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is my associate,” says the LORD who rules over all. Strike the shepherd that the flock may be scattered; I will turn my hand against the insignificant ones.

“ Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy, and say to them– to the shepherds:‘ This is what the sovereign LORD says: Woe to the shepherds of Israel who have been feeding themselves! Should not shepherds feed the flock?You eat the fat, you clothe yourselves with the wool, you slaughter the choice animals, but you do not feed the sheep!You have not strengthened the weak, healed the sick, bandaged the injured, brought back the strays, or sought the lost, but with force and harshness you have ruled over them.They were scattered because they had no shepherd, and they became food for every wild beast.My sheep wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. My sheep were scattered over the entire face of the earth with no one looking or searching for them.

You handed us over like sheep to be eaten; you scattered us among the nations.
