Why have You rejected us forever, God? Why does Your anger burn against the sheep of Your pasture?

David’s conscience troubled him after he had taken a census of the troops. He said to the Lord,“ I have sinned greatly in what I’ve done. Now, Lord, because I’ve been very foolish, please take away Your servant’s guilt.”

When David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord standing between earth and heaven, with his drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem, David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell down with their faces to the ground.David said to God,“ Wasn’t I the one who gave the order to count the people? I am the one who has sinned and acted very wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? My Lord God, please let Your hand be against me and against my father’s family, but don’t let the plague be against Your people.”

If I have sinned, what have I done to You, Watcher of mankind? Why have You made me Your target, so that I have become a burden to You?

Wash away my guilt and cleanse me from my sin.For I am conscious of my rebellion, and my sin is always before me.Against You— You alone— I have sinned and done this evil in Your sight. So You are right when You pass sentence; You are blameless when You judge.Indeed, I was guilty when I was born; I was sinful when my mother conceived me.

He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that, having died to sins, we might live for righteousness; you have been healed by His wounds.For you were like sheep going astray, but you have now returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.

I will appoint over them a single shepherd, My servant David, and he will shepherd them. He will tend them himself and will be their shepherd.I, Yahweh, will be their God, and My servant David will be a prince among them. I, Yahweh, have spoken.

Now please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave, in place of the boy. Let him go back with his brothers.

Sword, awake against My shepherd, against the man who is My associate— this is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts. Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; I will also turn My hand against the little ones.

“ Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel. Prophesy, and say to them: This is what the Lord God says to the shepherds: Woe to the shepherds of Israel, who have been feeding themselves! Shouldn’t the shepherds feed their flock?You eat the fat, wear the wool, and butcher the fattened animals, but you do not tend the flock.You have not strengthened the weak, healed the sick, bandaged the injured, brought back the strays, or sought the lost. Instead, you have ruled them with violence and cruelty.They were scattered for lack of a shepherd; they became food for all the wild animals when they were scattered.My flock went astray on all the mountains and every high hill. They were scattered over the whole face of the earth, and there was no one searching or seeking for them.

You hand us over to be eaten like sheep and scatter us among the nations.
