Again the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying,“ Go and take a census of Israel and Judah.”

The Lord was very angry with Israel. He stirred up David against them. He said,“ Go! Count the men of Israel and Judah.”

But David took not the number of them from twenty years old and under: because the LORD had said he would increase Israel like to the stars of the heavens.Joab the son of Zeruiah began to number, but he finished not, because there fell wrath for it against Israel; neither was the number put in the account of the chronicles of king David.

And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

And if the prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I the LORD have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.

Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give[ them] unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered,[ It is] for Saul, and for[ his] bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them;( now the Gibeonites[ were] not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn unto them: and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.)Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the LORD?And the Gibeonites said unto him, We will have no silver nor gold of Saul, nor of his house; neither for us shalt thou kill any man in Israel. And he said, What ye shall say,[ that] will I do for you.And they answered the king, The man that consumed us, and that devised against us[ that] we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the coasts of Israel,Let seven men of his sons be delivered unto us, and we will hang them up unto the LORD in Gibeah of Saul,[ whom] the LORD did choose. And the king said, I will give[ them].But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD’S oath that[ was] between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite:And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them in the hill before the LORD: and they fell[ all] seven together, and were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first[ days], in the beginning of barley harvest.And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water dropped upon them out of heaven, and suffered neither the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.And it was told David what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done.And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabeshgilead, which had stolen them from the street of Bethshan, where the Philistines had hanged them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in Gilboa:And he brought up from thence the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son; and they gathered the bones of them that were hanged.And the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was intreated for the land.

But as for you, ye thought evil against me;[ but] God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as[ it is] this day, to save much people alive.

Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the LORD have stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if[ they be] the children of men, cursed[ be] they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve other gods.

Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.

Wherefore I gave them also statutes[ that were] not good, and judgments whereby they should not live;

And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt.

For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.

And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? so let him curse, because the LORD hath said unto him, Curse David. Who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done so?
