“ Now go and say to my servant David,‘ This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has declared: I took you from tending sheep in the pasture and selected you to be the leader of my people Israel.I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before your eyes. Now I will make your name as famous as anyone who has ever lived on the earth!

So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes. And the Lord said,“ This is the one; anoint him.”So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.

I have found my servant David. I have anointed him with my holy oil.

He chose his servant David, calling him from the sheep pens.He took David from tending the ewes and lambs and made him the shepherd of Jacob’s descendants— God’s own people, Israel.

Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.

Then he said,“ When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

David appointed the following Levites to lead the people in worship before the Ark of the Lord— to invoke his blessings, to give thanks, and to praise the Lord, the God of Israel.Asaph, the leader of this group, sounded the cymbals. Second to him was Zechariah, followed by Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed edom, and Jeiel. They played the harps and lyres.

For the Lord declares,“ I have placed my chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem, on my holy mountain.”

Those who fight against the Lord will be shattered. He thunders against them from heaven; the Lord judges throughout the earth. He gives power to his king; he increases the strength of his anointed one.”

And it is only right that I should keep on reminding you as long as I live.For our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me that I must soon leave this earthly life,so I will work hard to make sure you always remember these things after I am gone.

On that day David gave to Asaph and his fellow Levites this song of thanksgiving to the Lord:

You sing trivial songs to the sound of the harp and fancy yourselves to be great musicians like David.

Sing to him; yes, sing his praises. Tell everyone about his wonderful deeds.

This is the blessing that Moses, the man of God, gave to the people of Israel before his death:

Are any of you suffering hardships? You should pray. Are any of you happy? You should sing praises.

For David himself wrote in the book of Psalms:‘ The Lord said to my Lord, Sit in the place of honor at my right hand

The years passed, and the Lord had given the people of Israel rest from all their enemies. Joshua, who was now very old,called together all the elders, leaders, judges, and officers of Israel. He said to them,“ I am now a very old man.You have seen everything the Lord your God has done for you during my lifetime. The Lord your God has fought for you against your enemies.I have allotted to you as your homeland all the land of the nations yet unconquered, as well as the land of those we have already conquered— from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.This land will be yours, for the Lord your God will himself drive out all the people living there now. You will take possession of their land, just as the Lord your God promised you.“ So be very careful to follow everything Moses wrote in the Book of Instruction. Do not deviate from it, turning either to the right or to the left.Make sure you do not associate with the other people still remaining in the land. Do not even mention the names of their gods, much less swear by them or serve them or worship them.Rather, cling tightly to the Lord your God as you have done until now.“ For the Lord has driven out great and powerful nations for you, and no one has yet been able to defeat you.Each one of you will put to flight a thousand of the enemy, for the Lord your God fights for you, just as he has promised.So be very careful to love the Lord your God.“ But if you turn away from him and cling to the customs of the survivors of these nations remaining among you, and if you intermarry with them,then know for certain that the Lord your God will no longer drive them out of your land. Instead, they will be a snare and a trap to you, a whip for your backs and thorny brambles in your eyes, and you will vanish from this good land the Lord your God has given you.“ Soon I will die, going the way of everything on earth. Deep in your hearts you know that every promise of the Lord your God has come true. Not a single one has failed!But as surely as the Lord your God has given you the good things he promised, he will also bring disaster on you if you disobey him. He will completely destroy you from this good land he has given you.If you break the covenant of the Lord your God by worshiping and serving other gods, his anger will burn against you, and you will quickly vanish from the good land he has given you.”

Then Jacob called together all his sons and said,“ Gather around me, and I will tell you what will happen to each of you in the days to come.
