But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to David’s rescue; he struck the Philistine down and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him, saying,“ Never again will you go out with us to battle, so that the lamp of Israel will not be extinguished.”

But the men said,“ You shall not go out. For if we flee, they will not care about us. If half of us die, they will not care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us. Therefore it is better that you send us help from the city.”

Nevertheless, for David’s sake the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, setting up his son after him, and establishing Jerusalem,

There I will make a horn to sprout for David; I have prepared a lamp for my anointed.

And David said to Abishai,“ Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom. Take your lord’s servants and pursue him, lest he get himself to fortified cities and escape from us.”And there went out after him Joab’s men and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men. They went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.When they were at the great stone that is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Now Joab was wearing a soldier’s garment, and over it was a belt with a sword in its sheath fastened on his thigh, and as he went forward it fell out.And Joab said to Amasa,“ Is it well with you, my brother?” And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.But Amasa did not observe the sword that was in Joab’s hand. So Joab struck him with it in the stomach and spilled his entrails to the ground without striking a second blow, and he died. Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri.

For you are my lamp, O Lord, and my God lightens my darkness.

He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my support.

who gives victory to kings, who rescues David his servant from the cruel sword.

And now the whole clan has risen against your servant, and they say,‘ Give up the man who struck his brother, that we may put him to death for the life of his brother whom he killed.’ And so they would destroy the heir also. Thus they would quench my coal that is left and leave to my husband neither name nor remnant on the face of the earth.”
