那時候有巨人在地上，後來也有；上帝的兒子們和人的女子們交合，生了孩子。那些人就是古代的勇士，有名的人物。

從非利士營中出來一個挑戰的人，名叫歌利亞，是迦特人，身高六肘一虎口。他頭戴銅盔，身穿鎧甲，甲重五千舍客勒銅。

這四個人是迦特巨人族的後裔，都仆倒在大衛和他僕人的手下。

利乏音人所剩下的只有巴珊王噩。看哪，他的床是鐵床，按照人肘的度量，長九肘，寬四肘，現今不是在亞捫人的拉巴嗎？」

於是探子中有人向以色列人散佈有關所窺探之地的謠言，說：「我們所走過、所窺探之地是吞沒居民之地，並且我們在那裏所看見的百姓都身材高大。我們在那裏看見巨人，就是巨人中的亞衲族人。我們在自己眼中像蚱蜢一樣，而在他們眼中，我們也確是這樣。」

大衛對非利士人說：「你來攻擊我，是靠着刀槍和銅矛，但我來攻擊你，是靠着萬軍之耶和華的名，就是你所辱罵、帶領以色列軍隊的上帝。今日耶和華必將你交在我手裏。我必殺你，砍下你的頭，今日我要把非利士軍兵的屍體給空中的飛鳥和地上的野獸，使全地的人都知道以色列中有上帝，又使這裏的全會眾知道，耶和華使人得勝，不是用刀用槍，因為戰爭全在乎耶和華。他必將你們交在我們手裏。」那非利士人起來，迎向大衛，走近前來。大衛急忙往戰場，迎向非利士人跑去。大衛伸手入囊中，從裏面掏出一塊石子來，用機弦甩去，擊中非利士人的前額，石子進入額內，他就仆倒，面伏於地。這樣，大衛用機弦和石子勝了那非利士人，擊中了他，把他殺死；大衛手中沒有刀。大衛跑去，站在那非利士人身旁，把他的刀從鞘中拔出來，殺死他，用刀割下他的頭。非利士眾人看見他們的勇士死了，就都逃跑。

那裏的百姓又大又多，像亞衲人一樣高大，但耶和華從亞捫人面前除滅他們，亞捫人就佔領他們的地，接續他們在那裏居住。

我們上哪裏去呢？我們的弟兄使我們膽戰心驚，說那裏的百姓比我們又大又高，那裏的城鎮又大，城牆又堅固，如天一樣高，並且我們在那裏看見亞衲族人。』

非利士人來了，散佈在利乏音谷。
