便雅憫族、庇革哩子示巴、兇暴人也。吹角告眾、曰、我與耶西之子大闢無與、以色列族各歸故幕可也。

胸懷睿智之人、較邑中十長者、更有能焉。

我觀世事、智之所用甚廣。設也城邑褊小、人民鮮少、大國之君圍之、築高壘以環攻、邑中有貧人、明哲是懷、施其智以救邑眾、其後人無復念之者。我竊思之、智愈於力、貧者之智、為人藐忽、不從其言。寧從哲士之詞、莫聽昏君之論。智之為用勝於劍戟、惟一愚人與其間、則雖有嘉謀、亦為所敗。

大闢聞之曰、尼耳子押尼耳見殺、我與我民永無辜、耶和華為證。罪歸約押、與其父家、願約押全家、或患白濁、或患癩疾、或扶杖而行、或殞沒於刃、或飲食匱乏、代有其人、相繼不絕。約押及亞庇篩、殺押尼耳、因昔戰於基遍、曾戮其弟亞撒黑也。大闢告約押與臣僕曰、當裂衣衣麻、為押尼耳哭、王親送喪。葬押尼耳於希伯崙、王大聲哭泣、於其墓側、民眾亦哭。王為押尼耳作悲歌曰、押尼耳之死、豈若罪犯哉。爾手足無桎梏、猶人亡於匪類、爾之死亡、亦若是。民又為之哭。時未及夕、民至於前、請大闢食餅。大闢誓曰、如日未入、而我食餅、或食諸物、願上帝罰我。民見此甚悅、王凡所為、無不悅服。當日以色列族眾咸知、殺尼耳子押尼耳者、非由於王。王謂臣僕曰、今日在以色列族中、元戎陷於死亡、汝豈不知。我雖受膏為王、今猶荏弱、而西魯雅之二子、桀驁不馴、願耶和華視惡人之罪戾、而報施焉。

惡不即罰、人專為惡。

大闢遣使詣約押所、曰、使赫人烏利亞至此、約押遵命。烏利亞既至、大闢問曰、約押無恙耶、民亦無恙耶、戰事若何。旋使烏利亞歸家濯足、烏利亞出王宮、王賜肴饌、以隨其後。烏利亞寢於宮門、與王之臣僕偕、不返私第。或告大闢、烏利亞未歸其第、大闢謂烏利亞曰、爾自遄征而至、曷不歸第。烏利亞曰、法匱及以色列猶大二族、俱居於幕、我主約押、及我主之僕從在野、建營而居處、我豈可歸第飲食、與妻偕寢乎。我指王以誓、亦指爾生命以誓、我必不行此。大闢謂烏利亞曰、今日宿此、明日我遣爾往。烏利亞居耶路撒冷、至於明晨、大闢召之於其前、賜以飲食、使之醉飽、至夕烏利亞出、寢於床、與主之臣僕偕、不歸其室。詰朝大闢致書約押、付於烏利亞手。書曰、戰事孔亟之時、使烏利亞列於前茅、命眾悉退、留彼獨在、被擊而死。約押攻城、知敵勁旅之所在、而使烏利亞與戰、邑眾悉出以戰約押、大闢臣僕殞沒者數人、赫人烏利亞亦死。約押遣人、以戰事告大闢、囑使者曰、汝以戰事告王、既畢其言、如王怒曰、戰鬥之際、何逼近城垣、豈不知敵將自城射我乎。昔耶魯庇設子亞庇米力、戰於提拜士、誰擊之死、非婦自墻擲磨石之上層、中之而喪亡乎。汝既知此、何近於城。則對曰、王之臣僕赫人烏利亞亦死。

邑中哲婦呼曰、請聽我言、願約押來前、我欲與言。
