智慧使智慧人有能力，比城中十個諮議員更有權勢。

以下這一項在日光之下我也看見，是智慧的例子；在我看來大有意義。有一個小城，裏邊的人稀少；有一個大王來攻擊它，圍繞它，修築大高壘來攻打它。但城中有一個人很貧窮，卻有智慧；他用他的智慧搭救了那城；卻沒有人懷念着那人，那貧窮漢。我說，雖即那貧窮漢的智慧儘管被藐視，而他的話儘管無人聽從，然智慧終是勝過勇力的。智慧人的話安安靜靜地有人聽，勝過掌管者在愚頑人之中的喊叫聲。智慧比打仗的器械好，但一個作錯了事的人能把許多好事弄壞。

事後大衛聽見了，就說：『對流尼珥兒子押尼珥的血案、我和我的國在永恆主面前永不負罪責。願這罪責盤旋在約押頭上、和他父系全家；又願約押家不斷有患漏症的、患痲瘋屬之病的、架柺而行的、倒斃於刀下的、缺乏食物的。』約押和他兄弟亞比篩殺了押尼珥，是因為押尼珥在基遍爭鬪時殺死了他們的兄弟亞撒黑的緣故。大衛對約押和跟隨的眾民說：『你們要撕裂衣服，腰束麻布，在押尼珥前面號咷哀哭；大衛王也在屍床後面跟着。他們將押尼珥埋葬在希伯崙；王在押尼珥的墓墳旁放聲而哭；眾民也都哭了。王為押尼珥舉哀說：『押尼珥之死、怎麼竟像愚忘人的死啊！你的手未曾被捆綁；你的腳未曾被銅鍊鎖住；你的仆倒、竟如人在橫暴之輩面前仆倒一樣！』於是眾民繼續為押尼珥哀哭。還在白日時候、眾民都來勸大衛喫飯；大衛起誓說：『我若在日頭未落以前喫飯、或喫任何東西，願上帝這樣懲罰我，並且加重地懲罰。』眾民領會了，大家都很滿意；凡王所行的、眾民都很滿意。那一天、以色列眾民才知道殺死尼珥的兒子押尼珥、並不是出於王的意思。王對臣僕說：『你們豈不知今日在以色列中仆倒了一個將軍、又是個大人物麼？我、我雖然受膏為王，今日還是柔弱；洗魯雅的兒子這些人比我強；願永恆主照惡人所行的壞事報應行壞事的人就是了。』

壞事的定案不立刻施刑罰，故此人類的心敢於作壞事。

大衛打發人到約押那裏，說：『你打發赫人烏利亞到我這裏來』；約押就打發烏利亞來見大衛。烏利亞來到大衛那裏，大衛就問約押好，也問眾兵好，又問戰事好不好。大衛對烏利亞說：『你下到你家裏去，洗洗腳。』烏利亞出了王宮，隨有王的一份食物也跟着他出來。烏利亞卻和他主上所有的僕人一同睡在王宮門外，並沒有下到他家裏去。有人告訴大衛說：『烏利亞並沒有下到家裏去呀』；大衛就對烏利亞說：『你、你不是從遠路上來麼？為甚麼不下到你家裏去呢？』烏利亞對大衛說：『上帝的櫃和以色列兵猶大兵都住在草棚裏；我主約押和我主上的僕人都在野外紮營；而我、我回家去喫喝、去和妻子同寢麼？我指着永活的永恆主、也指着你的性命來起誓，我決不這樣行。』大衛對烏利亞說：『你今天也住在這裏；明天我就打發你走。』於是那一天烏利亞仍住在耶路撒冷。第二天大衛召了烏利亞來，叫他在自己面前喫喝，並且喝醉。到了晚上、烏利亞就出去、在自己的床上和他主上的僕人一同睡覺；自己家裏呢、他根本就沒有下去。到了早晨、大衛寫信給約押，由烏利亞經手送去。信裏寫着說：『要派烏利亞到前面戰事劇烈的地方，你們便退到他後邊，讓他被擊殺而死。』當圍守那城的時候、約押知道哪裏有大力氣的人，便將烏利亞配置在哪裏。城裏的人出來，跟約押交戰；兵眾之中、大衛的僕人中有倒斃的，赫人烏利亞也死了。於是約押打發人把戰事的消息告訴大衛；又吩咐使者說：『你把戰事的消息對王說完了，王的烈怒若發作，而問你說：「你們為甚麼挨近城牆打仗呢？豈不知敵人會從城牆上射箭麼？從前擊死了耶路比設的兒子亞比米勒的是誰呢？豈不是一個婦人從城牆上丟下一塊上磨石來、打在他身上，他就死在提備斯麼？你們為甚麼挨近城牆呢？」那麼你就說：「王的僕人赫人烏利亞也死了。」』

有一個聰明的婦人從城上呼叫說：『聽啊，聽啊！請告訴約押說：「請走近前來，我好和你說話。」』

約押吹號角，兵眾就回來、不追趕以色列人；因為約押攔阻眾人。

於是約押吹號角，眾民就都站着不再追趕以色列人，也不再繼續打仗了。
