Then the woman went to all the people with her wise advice, and they cut off the head of Sheba son of Bikri and threw it to Joab. So he sounded the trumpet, and his men dispersed from the city, each returning to his home. And Joab went back to the king in Jerusalem.

我又看到日光之下有一種智慧，對我來說很偉大：有一座小城，城中的人很少；一個大君王來到，把它包圍，並建造巨大的高壘來攻城。城中有一個貧寒的智慧人，他用智慧救了那城；然而沒有人記念那個貧寒人。我就說：「智慧勝過武力」，但那個貧寒人的智慧被人輕視，他的話語也沒有人再聽從。聽智慧人安靜的言語，勝過聽管轄者在愚昧人中的喊叫。智慧勝過戰鬥的武器，但一個罪人能毀了許多好事。

事後大衛聽說了，就說：「對於尼珥的兒子押尼珥被殺流血的事，我和我的王國在耶和華面前永遠是清白的。願這罪歸到約押的頭上以及他父親的全家，願約押家不斷有患漏症的、患痲瘋的、拄拐杖的、倒在刀下的和缺乏食物的！」約押和他弟弟亞比篩殺押尼珥，是因他在基遍戰場上殺了他們的弟弟亞撒暉。大衛對約押和跟隨他的全體民眾說：「你們當撕裂衣服、束上麻布，在押尼珥面前哀哭。」然後大衛王跟在棺材後面。他們把押尼珥葬在希伯崙，王在押尼珥的墳墓旁放聲大哭，全體民眾也都哭了。王為押尼珥作哀歌，說：「押尼珥死去，怎麼像愚頑人死去！你的手沒有被捆住，你的腳沒有被銅鐐枷住，你卻仆倒，像人仆倒在不義之子面前！」全體民眾就又為他哀哭。人們在白天的時候都來勸大衛吃點東西，但大衛起誓說：「如果我在日落之前吃了餅或其他任何東西，就願神處置我，重重地處置我！」人們都認同了，這在他們眼中看為好，正如王所做的每一件事在他們眼中都看為好。那天，全體民眾和全以色列都知道，殺尼珥的兒子押尼珥不是出於王意。王又對他的臣僕說：「難道你們不知道，今天在以色列中有一位領袖、一位偉人倒下了嗎？我雖然被膏立為王，今天卻軟弱；這些人——洗魯雅的兒子們強硬得令我作難。願耶和華照著惡人所行的惡，報應惡人！」

因為沒有迅速執行對惡行的判決，所以世人的心裡就充滿了作惡的念頭；

大衛派人到約押那裡說：「你派赫提人烏利亞來見我。」約押就派烏利亞去見大衛。烏利亞來了，大衛問他約押是否平安、軍兵是否平安、戰事是否順利。然後大衛對烏利亞說：「你回自己家去，洗腳休息吧。」烏利亞就從王宮出來，隨後有一份王的禮物也跟著送來。烏利亞卻與他主人的眾臣僕一起睡在王宮門口，沒有回自己的家。有人向大衛報告說：「烏利亞沒有回自己的家。」大衛就問烏利亞：「你不是從遠路而來嗎？為什麼不回家去呢？」烏利亞回答大衛：「約櫃、以色列人和猶大人都住在帳幕裡，我主約押和我主的臣僕們都在野外紮營，我卻回自己家去吃喝，與妻子同寢嗎？我指著王和王的生命起誓：我絕不做這樣的事！」大衛對烏利亞說：「你今天也留在這裡，明天我送你走。」那天，烏利亞就留在耶路撒冷。第二天，大衛召他來一起吃喝，把他灌醉了。傍晚他出去，還是到他主人的臣僕們那裡，睡在自己的床鋪上，沒有回自己的家。到了早晨，大衛寫了一封書信給約押，讓烏利亞帶去。他在書信裡寫著說：「你要把烏利亞派到戰事激烈的前線，然後你們退到他後面，讓他被擊殺而死。」那時約押正在圍攻敵城，他就把烏利亞安排到他所知道敵兵最強的地方。城裡的人出來與約押交戰，軍隊中大衛的一些臣僕倒下了，赫提人烏利亞也死了。於是約押派人去把戰事的所有信息報告大衛。他吩咐使者說：「你把戰事的所有信息對王說完以後，如果王發火，對你說：『你們為什麼靠近城牆攻打呢？難道不知道他們會從城牆上射箭嗎？誰擊殺了耶路·比設的兒子亞比米勒呢？難道不是一個女人從城牆上把一塊磨石扔在他身上，他就死在了提備斯嗎？你們為什麼靠近城牆呢？』你就說：『你的臣僕赫提人烏利亞也死了。』」

一位有智慧的婦人從城上呼叫：「聽著！聽著！請告訴約押：上前到這裡來，我要對他說話。」

於是約押吹響號角，軍兵就返回，不追擊以色列人了，因為約押制止軍兵。

於是約押吹響號角，所有軍兵就停下，不再追趕以色列人，不再繼續打仗了。
