Wisdom makes the wise person stronger than ten rulers of a city.

I have observed that this also is wisdom under the sun, and it is significant to me:There was a small city with few men in it. A great king came against it, surrounded it, and built large siege works against it.Now a poor wise man was found in the city, and he delivered the city by his wisdom. Yet no one remembered that poor man.And I said,“ Wisdom is better than strength, but the wisdom of the poor man is despised, and his words are not heeded.”The calm words of the wise are heeded more than the shouts of a ruler over fools.Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner can destroy much good.

David heard about it later and said,“ I and my kingdom are forever innocent before the LORD concerning the blood of Abner son of Ner.May it hang over Joab’s head and his father’s whole family, and may the house of Joab never be without someone who has a discharge or a skin disease, or a man who can only work a spindle, or someone who falls by the sword or starves.”Joab and his brother Abishai killed Abner because he had put their brother Asahel to death in the battle at Gibeon.David then ordered Joab and all the people who were with him,“ Tear your clothes, put on sackcloth, and mourn over Abner.” And King David walked behind the coffin.When they buried Abner in Hebron, the king wept aloud at Abner’s tomb. All the people wept,and the king sang a lament for Abner: Should Abner die as a fool dies?Your hands were not bound, your feet not placed in bronze shackles. You fell like one who falls victim to criminals. And all the people wept over him even more.Then they came to urge David to eat food while it was still day, but David took an oath:“ May God punish me and do so severely if I taste bread or anything else before sunset!”All the people took note of this, and it pleased them. In fact, everything the king did pleased them.On that day all the troops and all Israel were convinced that the king had no part in the killing of Abner son of Ner.Then the king said to his soldiers,“ You must know that a great leader has fallen in Israel today.As for me, even though I am the anointed king, I have little power today. These men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too fierce for me. May the LORD repay the evildoer according to his evil!”

Because the sentence against an evil act is not carried out quickly, the heart of people is filled with the desire to commit evil.

David sent orders to Joab:“ Send me Uriah the Hethite.” So Joab sent Uriah to David.When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab and the troops were doing and how the war was going.Then he said to Uriah,“ Go down to your house and wash your feet.” So Uriah left the palace, and a gift from the king followed him.But Uriah slept at the door of the palace with all his master’s servants; he did not go down to his house.When it was reported to David,“ Uriah didn’t go home,” David questioned Uriah,“ Haven’t you just come from a journey? Why didn’t you go home?”Uriah answered David,“ The ark, Israel, and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my master Joab and his soldiers are camping in the open field. How can I enter my house to eat and drink and sleep with my wife? As surely as you live and by your life, I will not do this!”“ Stay here today also,” David said to Uriah,“ and tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day and the next.Then David invited Uriah to eat and drink with him, and David got him drunk. He went out in the evening to lie down on his cot with his master’s servants, but he did not go home.The next morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah.In the letter he wrote: Put Uriah at the front of the fiercest fighting, then withdraw from him so that he is struck down and dies.When Joab was besieging the city, he put Uriah in the place where he knew the best enemy soldiers were.Then the men of the city came out and attacked Joab, and some of the men from David’s soldiers fell in battle; Uriah the Hethite also died.Joab sent someone to report to David all the details of the battle.He commanded the messenger,“ When you’ve finished telling the king all the details of the battle—if the king’s anger gets stirred up and he asks you,‘ Why did you get so close to the city to fight? Didn’t you realize they would shoot from the top of the wall?At Thebez, who struck Abimelech son of Jerubbesheth? Didn’t a woman drop an upper millstone on him from the top of the wall so that he died? Why did you get so close to the wall?’— then say,‘ Your servant Uriah the Hethite is dead also.’”

a wise woman called out from the city,“ Listen! Listen! Please tell Joab to come here and let me speak with him.”

Joab blew the ram’s horn, and the troops broke off their pursuit of Israel because Joab restrained them.

Then Joab blew the ram’s horn, and all the troops stopped; they no longer pursued Israel or continued to fight.
