我看见日光之下有一种智慧，对我来说意义深远。有一个势力强大的君王来攻击一个人口不多的小城，他建造营垒围困这城。这城里有一个贫穷的智者，他用智慧拯救了这城，但事后人们却把他遗忘了。我认为智慧胜过武力，然而那位穷人的智慧却被轻视，他所说的话也无人理会。智者的细语胜过官长在愚人中的喊叫。智慧胜过兵器，但一个罪人却能破坏许多善事。

大卫听到消息就说：“耶和华作证，我和我的人民永远跟尼珥的儿子押尼珥的死无关。约押和他全家要承担这罪，愿他的后代永远有长疮的、患皮肤病的、拄拐杖的、被刀剑所杀的或挨饿的。”约押和他兄弟亚比筛之所以杀押尼珥，是因为押尼珥在基遍杀了他们的兄弟亚撒黑。大卫对约押和部下说：“你们要撕裂衣服，腰束麻布，在押尼珥棺前哭丧！”大卫王也跟在棺后送葬。他们就把押尼珥葬在希伯仑。大卫王和众人在墓旁大哭一场。大卫王哀悼押尼珥，说：“押尼珥啊！你怎能死得糊里糊涂呢？你的手没有被捆，你的脚没有被锁，你是死在阴险小人的手里啊！”于是众人都为押尼珥哀哭。大卫整天没有进食，众人来劝他吃一点东西，但他起誓说：“我若在日落以前吃任何东西，愿上帝重重地惩罚我！”众人听见了，都很喜悦，王做的每一件事都令他们喜悦。那天全国的人都看出尼珥的儿子押尼珥的死与大卫无关。大卫王对他的随从说：“你们难道不知道今天以色列损失了一位伟大的将领吗？今天我虽然是耶和华所膏立的王，但仍势单力薄，无法对付洗鲁雅的两个儿子，愿耶和华报应他们的恶行。”

对犯罪者的刑罚不迅速执行，世人便尽情作恶。

大卫便传信给约押，说：“你派赫人乌利亚来见我。”约押就派乌利亚去见大卫。乌利亚来了，大卫问他有关约押、士兵和战争的情况，然后吩咐他回家休息。乌利亚离开王宫后，收到大卫送的一份礼物。但他跟王的其他仆人一同睡在王宫门口，没有回家。大卫得知乌利亚没有回家，便对他说：“你远道而来，为什么不回家休息呢？”乌利亚答道：“约柜、以色列人和犹大人都在帐篷里，而我主约押及其军队也在田间扎营，我怎么可以回家吃喝快乐，与妻子同房呢？我敢在王面前起誓，我决不做这样的事！”大卫对乌利亚说：“你再住一天，明天我会派你回去。”于是乌利亚那日就留在耶路撒冷。第二天，大卫邀请他一同吃饭，把他灌醉了。可是到了晚上，乌利亚还是不肯回家，仍然跟王的其他士兵一同住宿。第二天早上，大卫给约押写了一封信，要乌利亚带去。大卫在信上吩咐约押：“你把乌利亚派到前线最险恶的地方，到时其他人都要撤退，好让敌人杀死他。”于是约押围攻城池时，便派乌利亚到最强悍的敌人那里。敌人出来迎战，大卫的军中有几位阵亡，赫人乌利亚也死了。约押就派人去向大卫禀告战争的详情，并叮嘱信使：“你向王禀告战情后，他若发怒责问你，‘为什么还冒死逼近呢？你们难道不知道敌人会从城墙上射箭吗？难道你们不知道耶路·比设的儿子亚比米勒是谁杀的吗？一个妇人从城墙上扔下一块磨石，把他砸死在提备斯。你们为什么还要逼近城墙呢？’你就对王说，‘你的仆人赫人乌利亚也死了。’”

有一个聪明的妇人从城上喊：“请听我说！请听我说！请约押到这边来，我有话要对他说。”

随后，约押吹起收兵的号角，部下便停止追赶以色列人。

于是，约押吹响号角，所有的人便停止了战斗，不再追赶以色列的军队。
