基列．雅比的居民聽見非利士人向掃羅所行的事，所有的勇士就動身，走了一整夜，把掃羅的屍體和他三個兒子的屍體都從伯．珊的城牆上取下來，帶回雅比，在那裡把他們燒了，又把他們的骸骨埋葬在雅比的垂柳樹下，並且禁食七天。

他在希伯崙作猶大的王七年零六個月；在耶路撒冷作全以色列和猶大的王三十三年。

以色列的眾長老都到希伯崙來見王。大衛王在希伯崙耶和華面前與他們立約，他們就膏立大衛作以色列的王。

撒母耳就拿起盛油的角，在他的兄長中膏立他。從那天起，耶和華的靈就大大感動大衛。後來撒母耳動身往拉瑪去了。

現在你們要堅強，要作勇敢的人，因為你們的主掃羅已經死了；猶大家已經膏立了我作他們的王了。”

非利士人聽見有人膏立了大衛作王統治以色列人，就全體上來搜尋大衛。大衛聽見了，就下到保障去。

猶大眾人回答以色列人說：“因為王與我們的關係親密。你們為甚麼因這事而生氣呢？我們從王那裡得到甚麼吃的呢？或是他給了我們甚麼禮物呢？”

大衛在希伯崙作王統治猶大家的時候共有七年零六個月。

於是以色列的眾長老都來到希伯崙見大衛王，大衛就在希伯崙，在耶和華面前與他們立約，他們就按照耶和華藉著撒母耳所說的話，膏立大衛作王治理以色列。

猶大啊，你的兄弟們要稱讚你；你的手必壓住仇敵的頸項；你父親的眾子必向你下拜。猶大是隻小獅子；我兒啊，你獵取了食物就上到洞穴去。他屈身伏臥，好像公獅，又像母獅，誰敢驚動他呢？權杖必不離開猶大，王圭必不離他兩腳之間，直到細羅﹙“細羅”有古譯本作“屬他的那位”﹚來到，萬族都要臣服他。

大衛王派人去見撒督祭司和亞比亞他，說：“你們要對猶大的眾長老說：‘你們為甚麼在請王回宮的事上落在人後頭呢？全以色列請王回宮的話已經傳到王和王宮那裡去了。
