他在希伯崙統治猶大七年半，在耶路撒冷統治以色列和猶大三十三年。

以色列的長老都到希伯崙見大衛王，大衛與他們在耶和華面前立約，他們膏立大衛做以色列的王。

撒母耳就拿出盛膏油的角，當著他哥哥們的面膏立他。從那天起，耶和華的靈降在大衛身上。事後，撒母耳回拉瑪去了。

現在你們的主掃羅已經死了，猶大支派已經膏立我做他們的王，你們要剛強勇敢。」

非利士人聽說大衛已被膏立為以色列王，就全軍出動，要搜尋大衛。大衛得到消息便退到堅城裡。

猶大人答道：「我們這樣做是因為王是我們的親族。你們為什麼生氣呢？難道我們吃了王的供應，得了什麼禮物嗎？」

大衛在希伯崙做王統治猶大支派七年半。

以色列的長老都到希伯崙見大衛王，大衛與他們在耶和華面前立約，他們膏立大衛做以色列的王，這應驗了耶和華藉撒母耳所說的話。

「猶大啊，你的兄弟們必讚美你，你必制伏你的仇敵，你父親的兒子必向你下拜。我兒猶大是頭小獅子，他獵食回來，躺臥如雄獅，蹲伏如母獅，誰敢驚擾他？王權必不離猶大，御杖必伴他左右，直到那位執掌王權的來到，萬民都必歸順他。

大衛王派人去對祭司撒督和亞比亞他說：「你們去問猶大的長老，『全以色列已經準備迎接王回宮，你們為什麼遲遲沒有反應？
