約押雖然沒有歸向押沙龍，卻歸向了亞多尼雅；這風聲傳到約押那裏，約押就逃到永恆主的帳棚，抓緊祭壇的角。有人告訴所羅門王說：『約押逃到永恆主的帳棚呢；看哪，他在祭壇旁邊呢。』所羅門就打發耶何耶大的兒子比拿雅，說：『你去將他殺掉。』比拿雅來到永恆主的帳棚，對約押說：『王這樣說：「你出來。」』約押說：『我不出去；我要死在這裏。』比拿雅就去向王回話說：約押這樣說，這樣回答我。王對比拿雅說：『你照他的話行，將他殺掉，將他埋葬，好叫約押流無辜人之血的罪不歸於我和我父的家。永恆主要使約押流人血的罪歸到他自己頭上，因為他用刀殺掉了兩個比他又義又好的人、就是以色列的軍長、尼珥的兒子押尼珥、和猶大的軍長、益帖的兒子亞瑪撒，將他們殺死，我父親大衛卻不知道。故此流這二人之血的罪總要歸到約押頭上、和他後裔頭上到永遠；而大衛和他的後裔、他的家和他的王位、卻要從永恆主那裏得平安到永遠。』於是耶何耶大的兒子比拿雅上去，擊殺了約押，將他殺死，給埋葬在曠野約押自己的宅地裏。王就立了耶何耶大的兒子比拿雅統領着軍隊來代替約押；王也使祭司撒督代替亞比亞他。

亞多尼雅同洗魯雅的兒子約押、和祭司亞比亞他商議；二人附從亞多尼雅，幫助他。

當時洗魯雅的三個兒子、約押、亞比篩、亞撒黑、也在那裏；亞撒黑的腿輕快、如同田野的瞪羚羊一般。

約押統領以色列的全軍；耶和耶大的兒子比拿雅統轄做衛兵的基利提人比利提人；

大衛說：『誰先攻擊耶布斯人，誰就作統領、作元帥。』洗魯雅的兒子約押先上去，他就作了統領。
