I am now eighty years old. Can I tell the difference between what is enjoyable and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats and drinks? Can I still hear the voices of male and female singers? Why should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?

I’m already 80 years old. I can hardly tell the difference between what is enjoyable and what isn’t. I can hardly taste what I eat and drink. I can’t even hear the voices of male and female singers anymore. So why should I add my problems to yours?

I am this day eighty years old. Can I discern what is pleasant and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats or what he drinks? Can I still listen to the voice of singing men and singing women? Why then should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?

I am eighty years old today, and I can no longer enjoy anything. Food and wine are no longer tasty, and I cannot hear the singers as they sing. I would only be a burden to my lord the king.

大衛對他說：「你如果與我一起過去，就會成為我的負擔。

我們一生的日子，是七十歲，如果強壯，可到八十歲；但其中可誇耀的，不過是勞苦愁煩，轉瞬即逝，我們就如飛而去。

我又為自己積聚金銀，還有來自君王們和各省的珍寶。我也為自己招納了男女歌手，以及許多的妃嬪，都是世人引以為樂的。

因此，在你青春的日子裡，當記念創造你的主——不要等到禍患的日子來到，不要等到你說「我在其中毫無喜樂」的歲月來臨；不要等到太陽、光線、月亮、星辰變為黑暗，雨後烏雲返回；在那日，看守家的顫抖，強壯的男人彎腰，推磨的女人因為人少而停工，向窗外看的人眼目昏暗；那時街道上的門關閉，推磨的聲音低沉，雀鳥一叫人就起身，所有歌唱的女子都衰微；甚至人害怕高處，害怕道路上的危險；杏樹開花，蚱蜢蹣跚，人的性慾衰退；因為人歸向自己永遠的家，哀哭的人在街道上繞行。

不過乾糧是給成熟之人吃的——他們經過實踐，識別能力得到操練，以致能分辨善惡。

因為你們嘗過主仁慈的滋味。

禍哉！那些清早起來追尋烈酒、流連到深夜為酒狂熱的人！他們的宴席上有豎琴、里拉琴、鈴鼓、橫笛和酒，但他們沒有注目耶和華的作為，也沒有注視他手所做的。

王對押沙龍說：「不，我兒，我們不必所有人都去，以免成為你的負擔。」押沙龍再三地求王，但王不肯去，只是祝福了他。
