Hushai went on to say,“ You know your father and his men– they are soldiers and are as dangerous as a bear out in the wild that has been robbed of her cubs. Your father is an experienced soldier; he will not stay overnight with the army.

戶篩又說：「你知道，你父親和跟隨他的人都是勇士，現在他們心裏惱怒，如同田野丟崽子的母熊一般，而且你父親是個戰士，必不和民一同住宿。

又曰、爾父與其侍從、乃為英武、爾所知也、今其衷懷暴怒、如熊在野、而亡其子、爾父又嫻戰事、必不宿於民中、

You know your father and his men; they are fighters, and as fierce as a wild bear robbed of her cubs. Besides, your father is an experienced fighter; he will not spend the night with the troops.

Hushai said,“ You know that your father and his men are mighty men, and that they are enraged, like a bear robbed of her cubs in the field. Besides, your father is expert in war; he will not spend the night with the people.

You know your father and his men; they are mighty warriors. Right now they are as enraged as a mother bear who has been robbed of her cubs. And remember that your father is an experienced man of war. He won’t be spending the night among the troops.

Hushai continued,“ You know your father and his men. They are warriors and are desperate like a wild bear robbed of her cubs. Your father is an experienced soldier who won’t spend the night with the people.

Then Hushai said,“ You yourself know your father and his men, that they are warriors and they are fierce, like a bear deprived of her cubs in the field. And your father is an expert in warfare, and he will not spend the night with the people.

For,” said Hushai,“ you know your father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are enraged in their minds, like a bear robbed of her cubs in the field; and your father is a man of war, and will not camp with the people.

Hushai said moreover, Thou knowest thy father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field; and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.

Hushai continued,“ You know your father and his men. They are warriors and are desperate like a wild bear robbed of her cubs. Your father is an experienced soldier who won’t spend the night with the people.

For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father and his men, that they[ be] mighty men, and they[ be] chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father[ is] a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.

Hushai said moreover,“ You know your father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are fierce in their minds, like a bear robbed of her cubs in the field. Your father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.

I will attack them like a bear robbed of her cubs– I will rip open their chests. I will devour them there like a lion– like a wild animal would tear them apart.

One of his attendants replied,“ I have seen a son of Jesse in Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is a brave warrior and is articulate and handsome, for the LORD is with him.”

And what more shall I say? For time will fail me if I tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets.Through faith they conquered kingdoms, administered justice, gained what was promised, shut the mouths of lions,quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, gained strength in weakness, became mighty in battle, put foreign armies to flight,

“ Then a second beast appeared, like a bear. It was raised up on one side, and there were three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told,‘ Get up and devour much flesh!’

It is better for a person to meet a mother bear being robbed of her cubs, than to encounter a fool in his folly.

He received honor from the thirty warriors, though he was not one of the three elite warriors. David put him in charge of his bodyguard.The mighty warriors were: Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan son of Dodo, from Bethlehem,Shammoth the Harorite, Helez the Pelonite,Ira son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, Abiezer the Anathothite,Sibbekai the Hushathite, Ilai the Ahohite,Maharai the Netophathite, Heled son of Baanah the Netophathite,Ithai son of Ribai from Gibeah in Benjaminite territory, Benaiah the Pirathonite,Hurai from the valleys of Gaash, Abiel the Arbathite,Azmaveth the Baharumite, Eliahba the Shaalbonite,the sons of Hashem the Gizonite, Jonathan son of Shageh the Hararite,Ahiam son of Sakar the Hararite, Eliphal son of Ur,Hepher the Mekerathite, Ahijah the Pelonite,Hezro the Carmelite, Naarai son of Ezbai,Joel the brother of Nathan, Mibhar son of Hagri,Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite, the armor-bearer of Joab son of Zeruiah,Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite,Uriah the Hittite, Zabad son of Achli,Adina son of Shiza the Reubenite, leader of the Reubenites and the thirty warriors with him,Hanan son of Maacah, Joshaphat the Mithnite,Uzzia the Ashterathite, Shama and Jeiel, the sons of Hotham the Aroerite,Jediael son of Shimri, and Joha his brother, the Tizite,Eliel the Mahavite, and Jeribai and Joshaviah, the sons of Elnaam, and Ithmah the Moabite,Eliel, and Obed, and Jaasiel the Mezobaite.

Later there was another battle with the Philistines, this time in Gob. On that occasion Sibbekai the Hushathite killed Saph, who was one of the descendants of Rapha.Yet another battle occurred with the Philistines in Gob. On that occasion Elhanan the son of Jair the Bethlehemite killed the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.Yet another battle occurred in Gath. On that occasion there was a large man who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in all! He too was a descendant of Rapha.When he taunted Israel, Jonathan, the son of David’s brother Shimeah, killed him.These four were the descendants of Rapha who lived in Gath; they were killed by David and his soldiers.

Like a roaring lion or a roving bear, so is a wicked ruler over a poor people.

Locate precisely all the places where he hides and return to me with dependable information. Then I will go with you. If he is in the land, I will find him among all the thousands of Judah.”

These are the names of David’s warriors: Josheb-Basshebeth, a Tahkemonite, was head of the officers. He killed eight hundred men with his spear in one battle.Next in command was Eleazar son of Dodo, the son of Ahohi. He was one of the three warriors who were with David when they defied the Philistines who were assembled there for battle. When the men of Israel retreated,

David prevailed over the Philistine with just the sling and the stone. He struck down the Philistine and killed him. David did not even have a sword in his hand.

Benaiah son of Jehoida was a brave warrior from Kabzeel who performed great exploits. He struck down the two sons of Ariel of Moab. He also went down and killed a lion in a cistern on a snowy day.He also killed an impressive-looking Egyptian. The Egyptian wielded a spear, while Benaiah attacked him with a club. He grabbed the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear.Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoida, who gained fame among the three elite warriors.

All his servants were leaving with him, along with all the Kerethites, all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites– some six hundred men who had come on foot from Gath. They were leaving with the king.

So the three elite warriors broke through the Philistine forces and drew some water from the cistern in Bethlehem near the gate. They carried it back to David, but he refused to drink it. He poured it out as a drink offering to the LORD

When he turned around and saw them, he called God’s judgment down on them. Two female bears came out of the woods and ripped forty-two of the boys to pieces.

The Danites said to him,“ Don’t say another word to us, or some very angry men will attack you, and you and your family will die.”

David replied to Saul,“ Your servant has been a shepherd for his father’s flock. Whenever a lion or bear would come and carry off a sheep from the flock,I would go out after it, strike it down, and rescue the sheep from its mouth. If it rose up against me, I would grab it by its jaw, strike it, and kill it.Your servant has struck down both the lion and the bear. This uncircumcised Philistine will be just like one of them. For he has defied the armies of the living God!”

Abishai son of Zeruiah, the brother of Joab, was head of the three. He killed three hundred men with his spear and gained fame among the three.
