那婦人把那二人藏了起來，卻說：『有人到我這裏來、固然是有，不過他們從哪裏來、我卻不知道。天黑城門快要關的時候、那些人出去了；但那些人到哪兒去、我卻不知道；快追趕他們去吧，就會趕上的。』其實那女人早已領二人上了房頂，將所擺在房頂上的麻稭把他們掩蓋着了。那些人就到渡口的約但河路上追趕他們去了；追趕他們的人一出去，城門就關了。二人還沒有躺着睡覺，女人就上房頂去找他們，對他們說：『我知道永恆主已經把這地賜給你們，並且有一種懼怕你們的恐怖情緒落到我們心裏，而且這地所有的居民因你們的緣故都膽戰心驚。因為我們聽見你們出埃及的時候、永恆主怎樣使蘆葦海的水從你們面前乾了，你們又怎樣處置約但河東邊亞摩利人的兩個王、西宏和噩，就是你們所盡行毁滅歸神的。我們一聽見，都膽戰心驚；因你們的緣故、再沒有人勇氣能立得住的了；因為是永恆主你們的上帝、他在上天下地在做上帝。現在求你們指着永恆主向我起誓：我既恩待你們，你們也要恩待我父的家，並給我一個可靠的信號，來救活我的父親、母親、我的弟兄姐妹、以及一切屬於他們的，而援救我們的性命不致死亡。』二人對她說：你若不把我們這件事告訴人，我們情願替你們死；那麼永恆主將這地賜給我們的時候，我們必定拿忠愛與誠信待你。』於是女人用繩子將二人從窗戶裏縋下去，因為她的房子是在城與廓之間的牆上；她是住在牆上的。她對他們說：『你們且往山地上去，免得追趕的人襲擊你們；你們要在那裏藏匿着三天，等追趕的人回來，然後你們才可以走你們的路。二人就對她說：『以下這幾件事你總要行，不然、你叫我們起的誓就與我們無干了。注意吧，我們來到這地的時候，你要把這條朱紅線繩子繫在你縋我們下去的窗戶上；你也要叫你父親、母親、你弟兄、和你父全家、都聚集在你家中。凡出了你家門到外邊去的，流他血的罪就必歸到他自己的頭上，與我們無干；凡在你家裏的、若有人下手害他，流他血的罪總要歸到我們頭上。你若把我們這件事告訴人，那麼你叫我們起的誓就與我們無干了。』女人說：『照你們的話就這樣吧。』於是把他們打發走；他們便去；她就把朱紅線繩子繫在窗戶上。二人去到山地上，在那裏住了三天，等到追趕的人返回。追趕的人一路尋找他們，卻找不着。二人就下山返回，過了河，去見嫩的兒子約書亞，向他敘說所遭遇的一切事。他們又對約書亞說：『永恆主把那地都交在我們手中了；並且那地所有的居民因我們的緣故都膽戰心驚呢。』
