Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said to the king,“ Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his head.”

Then Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, spoke to the king. He said,“ King David, why should we let this dead dog curse you? Let me go over there. I’ll cut off his head.”

Then Abishai the son of Zeruiah said to the king,“ Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over and take off his head.”

“ Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king?” Abishai son of Zeruiah demanded.“ Let me go over and cut off his head!”

“ You must not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people.

Then Mephibosheth bowed and said,“ Of what importance am I, your servant, that you show regard for a dead dog like me?”

Who has the king of Israel come out after? Who is it that you are pursuing? A dead dog? A single flea?

These words of Ish-bosheth really angered Abner and he said,“ Am I the head of a dog that belongs to Judah? This very day I am demonstrating loyalty to the house of Saul your father and to his relatives and his friends! I have not betrayed you into the hand of David. Yet you have accused me of sinning with this woman today!

David said to Ahimelech the Hittite and Abishai son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother,“ Who will go down with me to Saul in the camp?” Abishai replied,“ I will go down with you.”So David and Abishai approached the army at night and found Saul lying asleep in the entrenchment with his spear stuck in the ground by his head. Abner and the army were lying all around him.Abishai said to David,“ Today God has delivered your enemy into your hands. Now let me drive the spear right through him into the ground with one swift jab! A second jab won’t be necessary!”But David said to Abishai,“ Don’t kill him! Who can extend his hand against the LORD’s chosen one and remain guiltless?”David went on to say,“ As the LORD lives, the LORD himself will strike him down. Either his day will come and he will die, or he will go down into battle and be swept away.But may the LORD prevent me from extending my hand against the LORD’s chosen one! Now take the spear by Saul’s head and the jug of water, and let’s get out of here!”

Johanan and all the officers of the troops that had been hiding in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah.They said to him,“ Are you at all aware that King Baalis of Ammon has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to kill you?” But Gedaliah son of Ahikam would not believe them.Then Johanan son of Kareah spoke privately to Gedaliah there at Mizpah,“ Let me go and kill Ishmael the son of Nethaniah before anyone knows about it. Otherwise he will kill you and all the Judeans who have rallied around you will be scattered. Then what remains of Judah will disappear.”But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah,“ Do not do that because what you are saying about Ishmael is not true.”

I have not even permitted my mouth to sin by asking for his life through a curse–if the members of my household have never said,‘ If only there were someone who has not been satisfied from Job’s meat!’–

Honor all people, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the king.
