When King David got to Bahurim, a man belonging to the family of the house of Saul was just coming out. His name was Shimei son of Gera, and he was yelling curses as he approached.

As King David approached Bahurim, a man from the same clan as Saul’s family came out from there. His name was Shimei son of Gera, and he cursed as he came out.

King David approached Bahurim. As he did, a man came out toward him. The man was from the same family group that Saul was from. His name was Shimei. He was the son of Gera. As he came out of the town, he cursed David.

When King David came to Bahurim, there came out a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera, and as he came he cursed continually.

As King David came to Bahurim, a man came out of the village cursing them. It was Shimei son of Gera, from the same clan as Saul’s family.

When King David came to Bahurim, behold, a man was coming out from there from the family of the house of Saul, and his name was Shimei, the son of Gera; he was coming out, cursing as he came.

Now when King David came to Bahurim, there was a man from the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei the son of Gera, coming from there. He came out, cursing continuously as he came.

Her husband followed her, weeping all the way to Bahurim. Abner said to him,“ Go back.” So he went back.

“ Keep an eye on Shimei son of Gera, the Benjaminite from Bahurim who is with you. He uttered malicious curses against me the day I went to Mahanaim. But he came down to meet me at the Jordan River, and I swore to him by the LORD,‘ I will never kill you with the sword.’So don’t let him go unpunished, for you are a wise man. You know how to deal with him to bring his gray head down to Sheol with blood.”

“ You must not blaspheme God or curse a leader among your people.

However, a young man did see them and informed Absalom. So the two left quickly and came to the house of a man in Bahurim. He had a well in his courtyard, and they climbed down into it.

Then the king summoned Shimei and said to him,“ Build a house for yourself in Jerusalem and live there, but don’t leave there and go anywhere else.On the day you do leave and cross the Kidron Valley, know for sure that you will certainly die. Your blood will be on your own head.”Shimei said to the king,“ The sentence is fair; your servant will do as my lord the king has spoken.” And Shimei lived in Jerusalem for a long time.But then, at the end of three years, two of Shimei’s slaves ran away to Achish son of Maacah, king of Gath. Shimei was informed,“ Look, your slaves are in Gath.”So Shimei saddled his donkey and set out to Achish at Gath to search for his slaves. He went and brought them back from Gath.It was reported to Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and had returned.So the king summoned Shimei and said to him,“ Didn’t I make you swear by the LORD and warn you, saying,‘ On the day you leave and go anywhere else, know for sure that you will certainly die’? And you said to me,‘ The sentence is fair; I will obey.’So why have you not kept the LORD’s oath and the command that I gave you?”The king also said,“ You yourself know all the evil that you did to my father David. Therefore, the LORD has brought back your evil on your head,but King Solomon will be blessed, and David’s throne will remain established before the LORD forever.”Then the king commanded Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and he went out and struck Shimei down, and he died. So the kingdom was established in Solomon’s hand.

He said to David,“ Am I a dog that you come against me with sticks?” Then he cursed David by his gods.

Shimei son of Gera, the Benjaminite from Bahurim, hurried down with the men of Judah to meet King David.There were a thousand men from Benjamin with him. Ziba, an attendant from the house of Saul, with his fifteen sons and twenty servants also rushed down to the Jordan ahead of the king.They forded the Jordan to bring the king’s household across and do whatever the king desired. When Shimei son of Gera crossed the Jordan, he fell facedown before the kingand said to him,“ My lord, don’t hold me guilty, and don’t remember your servant’s wrongdoing on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem. May the king not take it to heart.For your servant knows that I have sinned. But look! Today I am the first one of the entire house of Joseph to come down to meet my lord the king.”Abishai son of Zeruiah asked,“ Shouldn’t Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD’s anointed?”David answered,“ Sons of Zeruiah, do we agree on anything? Have you become my adversary today? Should any man be killed in Israel today? Am I not aware that today I’m king over Israel?”So the king said to Shimei,“ You will not die.” Then the king gave him his oath.

They will wander through the land, dejected and hungry. When they are famished, they will become enraged, and, looking upward, will curse their king and their God.

Though they curse, you will bless. When they rise up, they will be put to shame, but your servant will rejoice.

Finally, the king and all the people with him arrived exhausted, so they rested there.

Do not curse the king even in your thoughts, and do not curse a rich person even in your bedroom, for a bird of the sky may carry the message, and a winged creature may report the matter.

Like a flitting sparrow or a fluttering swallow, an undeserved curse goes nowhere.

For he did not think to show kindness, but pursued the suffering, needy, and brokenhearted in order to put them to death.He loved cursing— let it fall on him; he took no delight in blessing— let it be far from him.He wore cursing like his coat— let it enter his body like water and go into his bones like oil.Let it be like a robe he wraps around himself, like a belt he always wears.

For they persecute the one you struck and talk about the pain of those you wounded.

“ You are blessed when they insult you and persecute you and falsely say every kind of evil against you because of me.Be glad and rejoice, because your reward is great in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
